Devin Carter, Josh Oduro and Ticket Gaines all finished in double-figures for the Friars.


NEW YORK, N.Y.- The No. 7-seed Providence College men's basketball team (20-12, 10-10 BIG EAST) defeated the No. 10-Seed Georgetown Hoyas (9-23, 2-18 BIG EAST), 74-56, in the First Round of the BIG EAST Tournament on Wednesday, March 13 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. Graduate student Josh Oduro (Gainesville, Va.) led the Friars on 20 points and nine rebounds. Junior Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) added 19 points and nine rebounds. He added a game-high six assists. Graduate student Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) tacked on 15 points, shooting 5-8 from the field and 4-7 from three.  

"Proud of our guys for finding a way to win." Head Coach Kim English said. "The most important game in tournament settings is to win the first game. The mission is to always go 1-0."

FIRST HALF:

• The Hoyas got the first points on the board with a field goal. Carter then nailed a three from deep to open the scoring for the Friars. The two teams went back-and-forth with three lead changes in the first 3:40 of the half. By the first media timeout (15:31 mark) the Friars led by two, 9-7.

•Around the 14:00 minute mark, the Friars went on an 11-0 run, extending their overall run to 17-2 within a span of four minutes. Georgetown struggled to score during this period, enduring a drought of over two minutes while missing all four of their field goal attempts. With 12:55 on the clock, Gaines flushed a three to force a GU timeout.

•The Friars held a 14-point lead (25-11) entering the 12-under media timeout (11:12 mark).

•Both teams picked up the scoring towards the end of the second half. With 9:12 left to play, the Friars had made 5-6 of their last field goal attempts while the Hoyas had converted four of their last five.

•Providence endured a four-minute stretch without scoring a field goal. Corey Floyd, Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) snapped the drought with a three from the corner. At the final media timeout (3:57 mark), the Friars held a 14-point advantage, 38-24.

•Despite going without a field goal for the final 4:15 of the half, the Friars managed to maintain a 13-point lead as they headed into halftime, 40-27.

•Carter was the only Friar to enter double-digit scoring in the first half, finishing with 10 points.

• Providence shot 12-32 (37.5%) from the field, 7-20 (35.0%) from three and 9-11 (81.8%) from the free throw line.

• Georgetown shot 10-31 (32.3%) from the field, 5-15 (33.3%) from three and 2-5 (40.0%) from the free throw line.

SECOND HALF:

Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) started the second half scoring on a reverse layup. With 16:12 on the clock, Gaines connected with Carter for an alley-oop dunk. At the first media timeout (15:02 mark), the Friars led, 49-38.

•Georgetown mounted a 7-0 surge with 13 minutes remaining, cutting the Friars' lead to nine, 49-40.  Oduro broke Providence's three-minute scoring drought with a three from the top of the key. At the under-12 media timeout (10:58 mark), the Friars led, 52-40.

•Both teams maintained the same pace of play throughout the majority of the half. The Friars held a 10-point lead, 64-54, at the final media timeout (3:54 mark).

•PC began to pull away in the closing minutes of the game as they embarked on a 10-0 run.

•The Hoyas failed to score in the final 3:40 of the match. As the final whistle blew, the Friars finished on top, 74-56.

HIGHLIGHTS:

•Providence finished 24-56 (42.9%) from the field, 12-32 (37.5%) from three and 14-18 (77.8%) from the free throw line.

•Georgetown finished 22-54 (40.7%) from the field, 8-24 (33.3%) from three and 4-19 (21.1%) from the free throw line.

•Three players finished in double figures for the Friars: Oduro (20), Carter (19) and Gaines (15).

•Jayden Epps led the way for the Hoyas with a game-high 30 points. Epps was the only Hoya to finish in double figures.

•Providence out-rebounded Georgetown by a margin of 37-35. The Friars outscored the Hoyas in points off turnovers (12-6), second-chance points (9-6) and fast-break points (7-4). Both teams finished with 24 points in the paint.

•Oduro shot 9-9 from the free-throw line.

Kim English became the first, first-year Friar Head Coach to win 20 games in a season.

NOTES:

•PC captured the BIG EAST Tournament title in 1994 and 2014.

•PC has posted a 26-40 mark all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament.

•Tonight's game marked the first meeting between the two teams in the BIG EAST Tournament since March 6, 2022.

Devin Carter was named the 2024 BIG EAST Player of the Year today (March 13). It marks the third time ever that a Friar has been named BIG EAST Player of the Year.  Former Friar Kris Dunn '16 earned the honor in 2015 and 2016.
Devin Carter was named All-BIG EAST First Team, Josh Oduro was named Honorable Mention and Rich Barron was named to the All-Freshman Team on 3/10.

•The Friars have posted a 4-1 mark this season against former coaches (3-0 vs. Cooley, 1-1 vs. Pitino).

Devin Carter is the eighth PC player to capture the BIG EAST scoring title (21.4 ppg in 20 league contests).

•The Friars now have earned 20 wins in a season for the 31st time in 97 seasons of action.

•The Friars are 19-2 this season when scoring 71 or more points.

•The Friars are 15-1 this season when leading at halftime.

•The Friars are 17-1 when outrebounding opponents this season.

UP NEXT

• The Friars will advance to the 2024 BIG EAST Quarterfinals and will face the No.2-Seed Creighton Bluejays on Thursday, March 14 at the Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on FS1.

•The Friars earned a 1-1 split in regular season action against the Bluejays. Providence currently holds a 20-15 all-time advantage against Creighton. In the last meeting between the two teams, the Friars upset the then-ranked No.19/18 Bluejays, 91-87, in an overtime thriller at the Amica Mutal Pavilion in Providence, R.I. on Feb. 7.
