Will Layden Claims BIG EAST Title In 50-Yard Freestyle

Layden now owns a total of three BIG EAST titles during his career.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. – Will Layden claimed the BIG EAST individual title in the men's 50-yard freestyle at the 2024 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 29 in Indianapolis, Ind. He won the race in a time of 19.66, which is a NCAA B-Standard in addition to a school record.

Earlier in the day, Layden finished first in prelims with a time of 19.77. At the time, his prelim performance also set a school record.

During the 2023 BIG EAST Championships, Layden won his first BIG EAST title in the 50-free with a time of 20.19. He went on to win the 100-yard freestyle (44.32) and became the first men's swimmer in program history to win multiple BIG EAST titles.Â

Horace Bowden '89 was the program's first BIG EAST Champion, having won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 1986. During the 2021 championship, Justin Viotto '22 won the 200-yard butterfly and Kevin Hood '23 captured the league crown in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Layden owns a program-best, three individual BIG EAST titles:
50-yard freestyle (2023) – 20.19
100-yard freestyle (2023) – 44.32
50-yard freestyle (2024) – 19.66

The men's 200-yard freestyle relay team of McGovern Brown, Alex Beauchene, Nathan Thayer and Will Layden finished second in a time of 1:20.85. Their second-place finish is the highest in any relay at the BIG EAST Championships in program history, and their time set a school record.
