MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the No. 5/5 Marquette Golden Eagles (22-6, 13-4 BIG EAST), 91-69, on Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friars fell to 18-10 overall and 9-8 in BIG EAST play. Junior guard Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) led the Friars with 18 points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals while shooting 4-9 from the three-point territory and 4-5 in free-throws. Graduate students Josh Oduro (Gainesville, Va.) and Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) contributed 12 and 15 points, respectively.
"Looking across the stat sheet, the numbers were very similar to Marquette's." Head Coach Kim English said. "However, they played harder than us tonight and they won. Effort is not on the stat sheet. They deserved to win."
FIRST HALF:
•The Friars went scoreless for the first 3:30 minutes of the game. Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) put Providence on the board with a three from the corner. At the first media timeout (15:50 mark) the Friars trailed 10-3.
•Following the timeout, the Golden Eagles continued to outscore the Friars, embarking on an 8-0 run to force a PC timeout with 13:44 left in the half, 20-4.
•The Friars began to gain momentum with a back-to-back threes from Gaines and Carter. However, the Golden Eagles quickly answered with an 8-2 surge.
•The Friars endured a scoring drought lasting over two minutes. As they headed into the under-8 media timeout at the 6:11 mark, Marquette led, 35-15.
•Entering halftime, the Friars trailed, 50-26.
•Gaines was a pivotal player for the Friars in the first half, leading the team in points (13), rebounds (three) and assists (two), while shooting 4-6 from the field, 3-5 from beyond the arc, and 2-3 from the free-throw line.
•Providence shot 9-25 (36.0%) from the field, 5-14 (35.7%) from three, and 3-8 (37.5%) from the free-throw line.Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) initiated the Friars' scoring in the second half with a three. The score sat at 57-33 leading into the first media timeout, Friars trailing.
•Marquette shot 18-28 (64.3%) from the field, 7-14 (50.0%) from three, and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free-throw line. SECOND HALF: ••Josh Oduro came alive in the second half, scoring eight points and shooting three of his last four field goals. At the under-8 media timeout (7:26 mark), Providence trailed, 78-54.
•Carter ramped up his scoring with two consecutive threes. The Golden Eagles held a 25 point lead as the final media timeout (3:47 mark) approached.
•The Friars were unable to close the gap. As the final whistle blew, the Golden Eagles finished on top, 91-69.
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
•Providence finished 23-56 (41.1%) from the field, 12-26 (46.2%) from three and 11-16 (68.8%) from the free throw line. •Marquette finished 33-58 (56.9%) from the field, 14-26 (53.8%) from three and 11-15 (73.4%) from the free throw line.•Four Friars finished in double figures: Carter (18), Gaines (15), Floyd, Jr., (13) and Oduro (12).
•Kam Jones led the way for Marquette with 17 points.
•Oduro and Carter combined points (33), accounted for 47.8% of points on the night.
•It marked just the second game this season which the Friars lost while making 10 or more threes (8-2).
•The Friars are now 2-3 vs. ranked teams this season and 132-282 all-time.
WHAT'S NEXT:
•The Friars are back home to host Villanova University on Saturday, Mar. 2 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 12:00 p.m. on FOX.•The Wildcats hold a 71-43 all-time series advantage over the Friars. In the first meeting this season, the Friars were defeated by Villanova, 68-50, on Feb.4 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pa.
