Friars Defeat Xavier In BIG EAST Action, 66-42

Olivia Olsen tallied a team-high 17 points; Emily Archibald added a career-best 11 rebounds.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Xavier, 66-42, in BIG EAST action on Sunday, Feb. 18 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 12-15 overall (6-8 BIG EAST), while the Musketeers dropped to 1-22 (0-14 BIG EAST).
1ST QUARTER:
• Providence held a 7-5 lead at the media timeout (4:57).
• Xavier used a 10-4 scoring advantage out of the timeout to claim a 15-11 lead with 1:19 left on the clock.
• Emily Archibald drilled a three with 39-second on the clock and hit one of two free throws on the Friars' next offensive possession to tie the game, 15-15.
• Xavier scored eight of its 15 points off of six Providence turnovers in the opening quarter
2ND QUARTER:
• The Friars extended their run to 6-0 as Nariah Scott converted a jumper in the paint for the first bucket of the second quarter (17-15).
• A 15-0 run Providence a 32-18 with 2:53 remaining. Olivia Olsen scored seven points in the spurt.
• Providence's defense was key in the run, holding Xavier scoreless for more than six minutes before Tae'lor Purvis made a three-point bucket with 38-seconds left.
• The Friars outscored the Musketeers 19-6 overall in the quarter and took a 34-21 lead into halftime.
• Olsen paced the Friars with 11 first-half points. Grace Efosa added six points and five rebounds.
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence started the third with a 12-1 advantage in the scoring column to extend its lead to 24 (46-22) with 4:34 on the clock.
• The Friars led 53-30 at the intermission after holding the Musketeers to single digits for the second-straight quarter (19-9).
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence scored eight-straight points to start the fourth quarter and mounted a 61-30 lead.
• Xavier answered with back-to-back threes to make it a 61-36 game with 4:19 to play.
• The Friars held a 13-12 scoring edge in the fourth enroute to the 66-42 victory.
NOTES:
• Olsen led three Friars in double figures with 17 points. She added eight rebounds, three blocked shots, one assist and one steal.
• Olsen became the second player in program history to record 50-or-more blocked shots in multiple seasons, joining Mary Baskerville '22. Olsen recorded 53 blocks last season and owns 50 blocks this year.
• Efosa contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals.
• Marta Morales Romero netted 10 points and added three boards, two assists, two steals and one blocked shot.
• Archibald hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds to go along with four points, three assists, three steals and three blocks.
• Ugne Sirtautaite matched her career-high with seven points and added four rebounds.
• Providence dominated the glass with a 52-26 edge in rebounding, including a 21-6 advantage on the offensive boards. The effort led to a 17-2 scoring edge in second-chance points.
• The Friars' 52 rebounds marked a season-high.
• Providence recorded a season-high nine blocked shots.

• The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 21 against Villanova. The game will be played at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. and will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. A live broadcast will be available on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FloSports.
