PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball was defeated by the No.1/1 UConn Huskies (19-2, 9-1 BIG EAST), 74-65, on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at the Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn. The Friars fell to 14-7 overall and 5-5 in BIG EAST play. Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) and Josh Oduro (Gainesville, Va.) each finished with 20 points and nine rebounds each on the night.

  

FIRST HALF: 

Devin Carter started the Friars' scoring with a driving layup, tying the score at two. Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) and Oduro followed with two consecutive layups. At the first media timeout (16:00 mark), the score was still tied at six.

•After the timeout, Providence extended their momentum with a 10-0 run. Floyd, Jr. secured a second-chance layup to grant the Friars their first lead of the game at 8-6, while Oduro added four points from two free-throws and a layup, making it 10-6.

•At around the 10-minute mark, the Huskies embarked on a 3:10, 6-0 run, while the Friars experienced a 3:30 scoring drought marked by three turnovers and one three-second violation. With 7:47 on the clock, Providence held a slim one-point advantage, 18-17.

•Oduro snapped the Friars' scoring drought with a three-point jumper, extending the Friars' lead to 21-17 (7:02 mark).

•At the five-minute mark, neither team managed to score, and UConn struggled to make a field goal, going 0-5 for over a 4:08 span. Connecticut's Stephon Castle broke the drought with an alley-oop dunk, prompting a timeout from PC with 4:37 left to play. The Friars held a narrow lead, 21-20.

•With 2:27 on the clock, UConn reclaimed the lead for the first time since the 17-minute mark with a three-pointer, putting the Huskies ahead 28-26. In the subsequent possession for the Friars, Ticket Gaines (Buffalo, N.Y.) was able to tie the game at 28 with a pull-up second-chance jumper.

•The Huskies answered with a made free throw. Both teams went scoreless for the last minute of the half. Entering the locker room, the Friars trailed by one, 29-28.

•Providence shot 12-31 (38.7%) from the field, 2-10 (20.0%) from three, and 2-4 (50.0%) from the free-throw line.

•Connecticut shot 11-24 (45.8%) from the field, 2-10 (20.0%) from three, and 5-11 (45.5%) from the free-throw line.

SECOND HALF:        

•Carter opened the Friars' second-half scoring with a three from the top of the key. With 18:08 on the clock, Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) converted two free throws to give Providence its first lead following a technical foul on UConn's Head Coach Dan Hurley. Oduro sank one free throw, becoming the first Friar to enter double-digit scoring with 10 points. The Friars led 34-31.

•The Huskies answered with a 6-0 run, putting the score at 37-34. Rafael Castro (Dover, N.J.) ended the scoring run with a put-back layup. At the first media timeout (15:33 mark), the Friars trailed 37-36.

•UConn started to extend its lead with a 13-2 surge while Providence suffered a 2:22-minute scoring drought, shooting 1-7 with three turnovers. At the 12-under media timeout (11:59 mark), the Friars trailed 44-38.

•Pierre found Carter for an emphatic dunk with 10:17 left to play, bringing the score within five for the Friars, 47-42. The Friars continued to shoot 3-3 from the field, spearheaded by Josh Oduro with four points.

•Oduro and Carter tacked on back-to-back jumpers to force a Husky timeout. At the 5:14 minute mark, the Friars trailed by four, 58-54.

• The game continued with the same pace for another three minutes. Freshman forward Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.) flushed a three to keep the game within two possessions for Providence. With 2:34 on the clock, the Friars trailed, 67-62.

• The Friars were unable to close the gap for the remainder of the half. UConn's Jaylin Stewart ended the scoring of the match with a dunk. Huskies finished on top, 74-65.

NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:         

•Providence finished 24-58 (41.4%) from the field, 4-18 (22.2%) from three and 13-26 (50.0%) from the free throw line.    

•Connecticut finished 22-55 (40.0%) from the field, 4-23 (17.4%) from three and 26-36 (72.2%) from the free throw line.   

•Two Providence players finished in double figures: Carter (20) and Oduro (20).

•Stephon Castle led the way for UConn with 20 points (7-14 FG, 2-4 3P, 4-7 FT). 

•In BIG EAST games only, Carter leads the league in scoring (21.1 ppg) and is third in rebounding (8.8 rpg). He finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists.  

 •Four technical were awarded in the second half.

• There were 46 combined fouls in tonight's game, the most in a BIG EAST game this season.

 

WHAT'S NEXT:         

•The Friars are on the road again for another BIG EAST matchup on Sunday, Feb. 4 against the Villanova Wildcats (11-10, 4-6 BIG EAST) at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia, Pa. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 p.m. on FS1. 

•Villanova holds a 70-43 all-time advantage against the Friars. The Friars have won the last two encounters with the Wildcats, the most recent being an 85-72 win on Feb. 18, 2023 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I.
