Bryce Hopkins excelled in season debut with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists.


 


PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team secured its first-ever win over the BYU Cougars (6-2), 83-64, in a BIG 12/BIG EAST Battle game on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. With the victory, the Friars improved to 6-3 on the season. Jabri Abdur-Rahim (South Orange, N.J.) led the Friars with 21 points while Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) added 16 points, five rebounds, and a team high four assists in his season debut.  

"A great bounce-back win for our group," Head Coach Kim English said. "We talked about how response is greater than result and tonight we put that to the test. We had a great couple of practices, and I was really pleased with the way we responded. It was great to see Bryce Hopkins back on the court at home. I'm proud of our guys for finding our way against an excellent BYU team." 

FIRST HALF: 

Wesley Cardet Jr. (Tallahassee, Fla.) kicked off the night's scoring with a quick layup. The Cougars countered in the following possession with a three.  

• A back-and-forth first few minutes saw BYU take a 9-7 lead into the first media time out of the game (15:08).  

• Coming out of the timeout, Bensley Joseph (Arlington, Mass.) scored eight of the next 10 Friar points to give Providence a 17-12 at the 12:00 mark.  

• Joseph registered his fourth field goal on four attempts to become the first player to reach double figures with 10 points.  

• Hopkins recorded his first basket of the season that capped a 12-2 Friar run and gave Providence a 31-19 lead with 8:06 remaining.  

• The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes. The Friars held a 34-25 lead entering the under-four timeout (3:43).  

• With approximately two minutes remaining, the Friars unleashed a 9-0 run fueled by three-pointers from Cardet, Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) and Rich Barron (Chicago, Ill.). By the 1:05 minute mark, PC held a commanding 13-point advantage over BYU, 43-30.  

• The Friars led 46-34 entering the locker room.  

Jabri Abdur-Rahim led PC in scoring in the first half with 11 points, followed by Bensley Joesph with 10.  

• Fousseyni Traore held a BYU team-best eight points at the half.  

• The Friars outscored the Cougars, 24-16 in points off the bench. 

• Providence shot 15-21 (71.4%) from the field, 8-12 (66.7%) from three, and 8-10 (80.0%) from the free-throw line.  

• Brigham Young shot 12-37 (32.4%) from the field, 4-12 (33.3%) from three and 6-7 (85.7%) from the free throw line.  

SECOND HALF:  

• Hopkins opened the second-half scoring with a free-throw. Christ Essandoko (Clichy, France) swiftly followed with an emphatic dunk off a pass from Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.).  

• At the first media timeout (15:07), PC led 51-38.  

• The Friars faced a two-minute scoring drought as the Cougars tacked on five points. Providence held a 53-46 lead heading into the under-12 media timeout (13:16).  

• Providence snapped its scoreless run with an 8-0 surge following back-to-back threes from Abdur-Rahim and Barron to force a BYU timeout at the 11:44 mark. Friars led, 61-46.  

•Out of the under-eight timeout, Jayden Pierre drilled a three from the top of the key to extend the Friar lead to 20, 71-51.  

• PC stayed in control, leading 76-55 with 3:55 left in the game. 

• The Friars defeated the Cougars 83-64 

HIGHLIGHTS: 

• Providence finished 25-42 (59.5%) from the field, 12-22 (54.5%) from three and 21-26 (80.8%) from the free throw line.  

• Brigham Young finished 23-69 (33.3%) from the field, 7-25 (28.0%) from three and 11-17 (64.7%) from the free throw line.   

• Four Friars scored in double figures: Jabri Abdur-Rahim (21), Bryce Hopkins (16), Bensley Joseph (12), and Jayden Pierre (12).  

• Providence registered 12 three-point field goals on the night, while BYU made seven 

• Dawson Baker led the BYU offense with 16 points.

• Attendance: 12,005 

• The Friars have now registered a 4-2 mark all-time in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle. 

• The Friars have now posted a 1-2 mark all-time versus BYU. 

• The Friars have now a 26-41 mark versus current teams in the Big 12. 

• Tonight marked Hopkins' season debut.  

• The Friars finished with a 39-37 edge in points off the bench.

The Friars will face Ocean State foe, Rhode Island (8-0) on Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Thomas M. Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. Tip-off is slated for 12:00 p.m. on CBSSN. 

The Providence Friars and the URI Rams will be playing for the 134th time on December 7. PC holds a 77-56 edge in the series. In the last 20 meetings between the two teams, Providence holds a 14-6 advantage with the Friars winning 11 of the last 13 games. Last season, the Friars defeated the Rams, 84-69, on December 2, 2023 in Providence. In the most recent meeting at the Ryan M. Ryan Center, the Friars earned a 66-52 win on December 2, 2022 in Kingston, R.I.
