QUEENS, N.Y.– The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by St. John's, 3-1, in its season finale on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, in Queens, N.Y. The Friars finished the season 8-21 overall (1-17 BIG EAST), while St. John's improved to 21-11 (10-8 BIG EAST).
FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's earned a 25-23 victory in the first set.
- St. John's got out to a 5-2 lead to begin the set.
- Providence fought back to narrow St. John's lead to 6-5.
- The Red Storm extended their lead to 16-9
- The Friars chipped away and cut St. John's advantage to 22-20.
- St. John's won the set, 25-23.
SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's won the second set, 25-18.
- The two teams went back-and-forth to reach a tie score of 6-6.
- The Red Storm went on an 8-3 run to take a 14-9 advantage.
- Providence fought back and narrowed St. John's lead o 18-15.
- St. John's maintained its lead (20-15).
- The Red Storm won the second set 25-18.
THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS: Providence took the third set, 25-22.
- Providence and St. John's were tied early in the set, 4-4.
- The Friars went on a 3-0 run to take a 7-4 advantage, forcing St. John's to call a timeout.
- The Red Storm fought back and tied the set 13-13.
- St. John's took an 18-17 advantage.
- Providence regained the lead (22-19).
- The Friars won set three 25-22.
FOURTH SET HIGHLIGHTS: St. John's took the fourth set 25-13 and won the match 3-1.
- St. Johns got out to a quick 7-2 advantage, forcing Providence to call a timeout.
- The Red Storm extended their lead to 13-5.
- Sophia Adkins recorded two-consecutive kills to bring the score to 14-9.
- St. John's maintained the lead throughout the set and won 25-15.
MATCH NOTES:
Sophia Adkins recorded a team-high 22 kills.
Shaliyah Rhoden tallied 15 kills and six digs.
Jiji Lykins led the Friars with 20 digs and three aces.
Providence recorded 45 kills, 47 digs, four blocks and five ace.
