Field Hockey Concludes Season With 3-2 Loss To Villanova In BIG EAST Action

Bella DelNegro and Macie Pennisi each scored a goal in the match.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to Villanova, 3-2, in BIG EAST play on Friday, Nov. 1 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. Both teams concluded their seasons, as No. 19 Liberty defeated Georgetown to secure the final spot in the four-team BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. Providence finished the year 7-10 (3-4 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats posted a 10-7 mark (4-3 BIG EAST).
 
GAME FLOW:
Bella DelNegro scored her second goal of the season to give the Friars a 1-0 lead just 2:33 into the match. Bo Martina was credited with the assist after feeding DelNegro the ball in the middle of the circle from just outside the 25.
• Villanova outshot the Friars 5-1 in the first quarter, including a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Wildcats also held a 5-0 edge in offensive corners.
Macie Pennisi gave the Friars a 2-0 lead with a direct shot on a penalty corner, assisted by Marley Mailloux and Martina.  
• Villanova cut the deficit to one (2-1) just 1:34 into the third quarter as Sabine de Ruijter converted a drag flick goal during a penalty corner. She was assisted by Emma Schwarz and Raina Smolij.
• Roughly 10 minutes later (41:26), Villanova's Jane Bresnahan picked up a loose ball and fired a reverse stick shot to tie the game, 2-2.
• At 42:07, the Wildcats were awarded a penalty-stroke opportunity and De Ruijter put the ball in the upper left of the cage. The goal gave the Wildcats a 3-2 lead.
• Villanova took its one-goal advantage into the fourth quarter.
• The Wildcats held on for the 3-2 win after both teams were scoreless in the final 15 minutes.
• The Wildcats led in shots (12-10), shots on goal (6-5) and penalty corners (10-9) for the game.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Martina recorded her second multi-assist game of the season.
• Pennisi recorded her fifth goal of the season, while DelNegro 
Asia Porter completed the day with three saves, while her counterpart from Villanova, Maddi Sears, also stopped three shots.
