Women’s Hockey Travels To Vermont For Away Series

The Friars are currently 6-14-1 and 5-8-1 in Hockey East play.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's hockey team will travel to Vermont for an away series against the Catamounts on Friday, Jan. 12 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 6-14-1 and 5-8-1 in Hockey East play. In their last matchup, the Friars were swept by the Princeton Tigers in the 2024 Friendship Series in Belfast, Northern Ireland. On Friday, Jan. 5 the Friars took a 6-1 loss followed by a close 2-1 loss on Saturday, Jan. 6.
 
Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) finished the weekend with 37 saves. Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) and Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine) each tallied a goal. Maddy Coene (Clayton, N.Y.) and Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.) assisted Johnson to the goal. Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.) and Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) earned an assist for Kirchmair's goal.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish third in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Friars, who received 74 points, were picked to finish behind Northeastern (88) and Vermont (75). The Huskies, who won the 2023 Hockey East Tournament, received eight first place votes.
 
Rounding out the poll was UConn (65), Boston University (59), Boston College (58), Maine (38), New Hampshire (35), Merrimack (28) and Holy Cross (20).
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes nine new players (two transfers and six freshmen) to the roster for the 2023-24 season. Grace Shirley (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) is a graduate student from University of Wisconsin and Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine) a junior from Syracuse University. The six freshmen are Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.), Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.), Peyton Blaney (Millgrove, Ontario), Dylan Berman (Deephaven, Minn.), Taylor Gilmour (Napanee, Ontario), Taya Currie (Parkhill, Ontario) and Avery Callison (Acton, Mass).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and senior Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) were named captains for the 2023-24 season, along with alternate captains Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) and Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.).
 
Hockey East Award Winners
Audrey Knapp was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 23 for scoring three goals in two games.
 
Knapp earned Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Nov. 27 for scoring the lone goal and game-winner against Brown University.
 
Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) earned Hockey East Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 11 for recording four points on Dec. 8 against New Hampshire and scoring the Friars' lone goal against Boston University on Dec. 9.
 
Scouting the Catamounts
Vermont enters the weekend matchup at 9-10-1 (7-6-0 HEAW). The Catamounts' last matchup was against RPI on Friday, Jan. 5 and Saturday, Jan. 6. Vermont lost 5-1 in both games.
 
Who to Watch
Natálie Mlýnková leads the Catamounts with 21 points consisting of 10 goals and 11 assists. Lara Beecher follows with seven goals and seven assists for 14 points.
 
Goaltender Jessie McPherson has started between the pipes in 12 games. McPherson has recorded 262 saves this season for a .907 save percentage and a 2.25 GAA.
 
All-Time Series with the Catamounts
Providence currently leads the all-time series record against Vermont, 37-23-14. The Friars last faced Vermont in the 2023 Hockey East Tournament semifinal round. Providence shutout the Catamounts 1-0 to advance to the Hockey East Championship.
