PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The BIG EAST Conference has announced the winners of the 2022-23 BIG EAST Sport Excellence Awards today, Aug. 10, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. Of the 22 overall award winners, two of the honorees represent Providence College.
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) earned the award for men's cross country and
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) claimed the recognition for women's outdoor track.
The Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Rocha is a three-time recipient of the BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award. He is a six-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection. In 2021, Rocha was awarded the Providence College Male Athlete of the Year for individual sports. His athletic accomplishments include finishing sixth at the 2022 BIG EAST Cross Country Championship and fifth at the NCAA Northeast Regional in 2022. Rocha finished 73
rd at the 2022 NCAA Cross Country Championships, after earning an individual at-large selection.
Flockhart is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection at Providence College. During the 2023 outdoor track season, Flockhart was part of the relay team who set a school record and won the Penn Relays Championship of America 4x1500 meters. Flockhart was also the 2023 BIG EAST Champion in the 1,500 meters. At the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track Championship, she earned First Team All-America honors for the second time in her career after placing sixth in the 1,500 meters.
