No.14 Women’s Hockey Travels To University Of Vermont For Hockey East Semifinal Round

The Friars defeated the University of Maine in the Hockey East quarterfinal round

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 3 seeded Friars will travel to Burlington, Vt. to take on No. 2 seeded Vermont on Wednesday, Mar. 1 in the Hockey East semifinal round. Time of puck drop is 7:30 p.m. The winner of Wednesday night's semifinal game will advance to the Hockey East Championship Game against either Northeastern or Boston College at noon on Saturday, March 4.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars finished regular season play 20-10-4 overall and 15-8-4 in Hockey East play. The Friars are coming off a weekend win over the University of Maine, 5-2, in the Hockey East quarterfinal round.
 
Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) led the Friars in total points with four assists. Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) and Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) followed with two points each. Peterson scored two goals while Kirchmair added two assists. Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) finished Saturday 30 saves.

Hockey East Award Winners
Walinski was named Pro-Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Feb. 27 for her 30 saves over Maine in the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East tournament.
 
Brooke Becker earned Hockey East Army ROTC Defender of the Week on Feb. 27 for recording a career-high four points in a single game.
 
Hjalmarsson was named to the Hockey East First Team for the 2022-23 season as announced on Feb.24.
 
DeBlois was named Hockey East Second Team as announced on Feb.24
Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Best Defensive Forward for the 2022-23 season. She is the first Friar to ever be awarded the honor since its 2009-10 inception.
 
Kirchmair was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team. Kirchmair is third in total points for the Friars with 11 goals and nine assists.
 
Hope Walinski was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Feb. 20 for her first career shutout with 33 saves in her first collegiate appearance between the pipes on Feb 18.
 
Sara Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Co-Player of the Week as announced on Jan. 30 for recording her fourth career hat trick on Jan. 27 against the University of New Hampshire.
 
Claire Tyo was named Hockey East Defender of the Week as announced on Dec. 12 for tallying three assists in a single game on Dec. 10.
 
Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Player of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Hjalmarsson was recognized for having a four-goal game against Maine on Nov. 19.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Stop It Goaltender of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Abstreiter was recognized for tallying her sixth shutout this season and 63 saves over the weekend.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month as announced on Nov. 2. Kirchmair was recognized for leading the Friars in goals with seven and leading all of Hockey East in goals among freshman.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 24. Kirchmair was recognized for earning two goals over the weekend. She has recorded seven goals and two assists across eight season games.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 17 for another shutout weekend. With a combined 25 saves she is the first goalie in program history to tally four-consecutive shutouts.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 10. Abstreiter was recognized after a shutout weekend over Union College and RPI, posting a combined 35 saves.
 
Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) was named Hockey East Pro-Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Sept. 26. Kirchmair was recognized for scoring the game-winner with her first career goal against St. Lawrence.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Providence received 61 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Vermont (79) and Boston College (76). The Huskies, who won the 2022 Hockey East Tournament, received nine first place votes.
 
Scouting the Catamounts
Vermont finished regular season play 21-10-3 overall with a 16-8-3 Hockey East record. The Catamounts last faced the University of New Hampshire in the quarterfinal round of the Hockey East tournament. On Saturday, Feb. 25 the Catamounts defeated the Wildcats, 2-1, in overtime. As a team, Vermont averages 27.9 shots per game and hold a .208 conversion rate on power plays with a 55.0 faceoff success percentage.
 
Who to Watch
Graduate student Theresa Schafzahl leads the Catamounts in total points and assists with 45 and 24, respectively. Junior Natálie Mlýnková leads in goals with 23. Junior goaltender Jessie McPherson has appeared in 34 games for the Catamounts. McPherson has recorded 21 wins and 657 saves for a .914 save percentage and a 1.82 GAA.
 
All Time Series with the Catamounts
Providence currently leads the all-time series record against Vermont 36-23-14. The Friars faced Vermont three times during the 2022-23 regular season. Vermont defeated the Friars 2-0 on Jan. 6 and 4-1 on Jan. 7. The following weekend, the Catamounts took another win over the Friars, 3-0, on Jan. 13.  
 
Friars in Hockey East Tournament
The Friars are 21-22 all-time in Hockey East Tournament play. The Friars and Catamounts met in the 2021-22 postseason, with Vermont earning a 4-1 win on home ice in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Prior to the 2021-22 postseason, the two teams met in the 2017 Hockey East quarterfinal round when Vermont recorded a 2-1 win.
