Women's Basketball Falls To St. John's In Regular-Season Finale, 53-50

Friars will enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 10 seed and face No. 7 seed DePaul on Friday at Mohegan Sun.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 53-50, in the regular-season finale on Monday, Feb. 27 at Alumni Hall. Providence (13-18, 4-16 BIG EAST) will enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 10 seed and will face No. 7 seed DePaul in the first round on Friday, March 3 at 1:30 p.m. The Red Storm improved to 22-7 overall (13-7 BIG EAST).
 
1ST QUARTER:
• St. John's got out to a 10-2 lead through the first five minutes of action. 
• Providence was scoreless for 4:45 until Grace Efosa converted a traditional three-point play at 4:22 (10-5).
• It sparked a 10-0 run to give the Friars a 12-10 lead with 1:44 on the clock.
• Providence held a 13-12 lead at the intermission.
 
2ND QUARTER:
Kylee Sheppard got the scoring going for Providence in the second quarter to give her team a 15-12 lead (9:48).
• The two teams traded baskets during the opening 6:25 of the quarter and the Friars maintained a slim 21-20 advantage at the media timeout (3:36).
• St. John's closed the final 5:51 of the quarter with a 10-0 run to take a 28-21 lead at halftime.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Red Storm extended their run to 15-0 as they started the third quarter with five-straight points (33-21).
Grace Efosa ended a nine-minute scoring drought with a lay-in at the 6:55 mark (33-23).
• St. John's led 37-25 at the media timeout (4:28).
• A triple from the left wing by Emily Archibald got Providence inside single digits with 2:23 to play (37-28).
• Providence remained within nine at the intermission (41-32).
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars started the final frame with an 7-2 scoring spurt to get within 43-39 and force a St. John's timeout with 7:07 left in the game.
• Efosa scored five of the Friars' seven points during the stretch.
• Farrell and Crooms scored back-to-back buckets to make it an 11-2 run, tying the game, 43-43, at the 5:20 mark.
• Crooms hit one of two free throws with 2:59 to play to give the Friars a 44-43 lead.
• St. John's ended a scoring drought of 6:22 with a 7-0 run to regain the lead (50-45).
• Farrell responded with a three-point bucket at the top of the key with 1:28 to play (50-47).
• With the Friars trailing 51-47, Archibald drained a three-pointer from the wing to bring Providence within one (51-50) with 10.5-seconds on the game clock.
• St. John's called a timeout to advance the ball and Providence sent Kadaja Bailey to the free-throw line with 9.4-seconds left. 
• Bailey hit the first and missed the second, but St. John's managed to grab the rebound.
• Bailey went back to the line with 5.7-seconds left and hit one of two attempts to give St. John's a three-point lead (53-50).
• Providence called its final timeout to advance the ball and draw up a final play.
• The Friars' look at a three was well-contested and St. John's gained possession with 0.4-seconds left in regulation.
• After a timeout, the Red Storm inbounded the ball to end the game and claim a 53-50 victory.
 
NOTES:
• Crooms finished the night with a team-best 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
• Efosa added 12 points and three rebounds.
• Farrell and Archibald contributed nine points and eight points, respectively.
• Providence matched its season low of six turnovers in the game, while St. John's committed 12.
• The Red Storm won the battle of the boards, 40-28.

• The Friars will enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 10 seed and will face No. 7 seed DePaul in the first round on Friday, March 3. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on SNY.
