Women’s Hockey Prepares For Home-And-Home Series Against Northeastern

The Friars are currently 2-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in Hockey East play.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Women's Hockey will face Northeastern University in a home-and-home series this weekend. The Friars will travel to Boston, Mass. on Friday, Nov. 10 for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop before hosting the Huskies on Saturday, Nov. 11 for a 3:00 p.m. start.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 2-7-0 overall and 2-3-0 in Hockey East. The Friars split last weekend with New Hampshire. The Friars took a 3-1 loss on Friday, Nov. 3 then won, 1-0, on Saturday, Nov. 4.
 
Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) finished the weekend with 27 saves. Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) scored the Friars lone goal on Friday with help from Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Cristina Cavaliere (Mississuaga, Ontario). Maddy Coene (Clayton, N.Y.) scored the game-winner on Saturday with Grace Shirley (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and Cristina Cavaliere assisting.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish third in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 12. The Friars, who received 74 points, were picked to finish behind Northeastern (88) and Vermont (75). The Huskies, who won the 2023 Hockey East Tournament, received eight first place votes.
 
Rounding out the poll was UConn (65), Boston University (59), Boston College (58), Maine (38), New Hampshire (35), Merrimack (28) and Holy Cross (20).
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes nine new players (two transfers and six freshmen) to the roster for the 2023-24 season. Grace Shirley (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) is a graduate student from University of Wisconsin and Hannah Johnson (Readfield, Maine) a junior from Syracuse University. The six freshmen are Audrey Knapp (Stevens Point, Wis.), Kiara Kraft (Churchville, N.Y.), Peyton Blaney (Millgrove, Ontario), Dylan Berman (Deephaven, Minn.), Taylor Gilmour (Napanee, Ontario), Taya Currie (Parkhill, Ontario) and Avery Callison (Acton, Mass).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) and senior Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) were named captains for the 2023-24 season, along with alternate captains Lindsay Bochna (Toronto, Ontario) and Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.).
 
Hockey East Award Winners
Audrey Knapp was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 23 for scoring three goals in two games.
 
Scouting the Huskies
The Huskies enter the weekend at 7-6-0 (3-4-0 HEAW). Last weekend, Northeastern was swept by UConn. The Huskies lost 3-0 on Friday, Nov. 3 and lost 1-0 on Saturday, Nov. 4.
 
Who to Watch
Skylar Irving leads the Huskies in points with one goal and nine assists. Following Irving in points is Peyton Anderson with seven goals and two assists. 
 
Goaltender Gwyneth Philips has started between the pipes in every game. Philips has recorded 284 saves this season for a .959 save percentage and a 0.93 GAA.
 
All-Time Series with the Huskies
Providence and Northeastern are currently tied in the all-time series record, 69-69-12. The last time the Friars faced Northeastern was in the Hockey East Championship on Mar. 4 when the Huskies won 4-1.
