CONSHOHOCKEN, PA. – The Providence College field hockey team concluded its 2023 season with a 2-1 loss at La Salle. The game was deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation and a pair of overtime sessions before the Explorers used a 2-1 advantage in the shootout to decide the match. The Friars finish the year with a 10-8 record, while La Salle improved to 13-5.
1ST QUARTER:
• The teams were scoreless through the opening 15 minutes of play (0-0).
• La Salle earned a penalty corner just 55-seconds in, but were unable to get a shot off.
• The Friars outshot the Explorers, 2-1, putting both of their attempts on target.
• La Salle managed the only offensive corner of the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER:
• Freshman
Lily Procaccianti put the Friars on the board for a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the action (16:17). It marked her fourth goal of the season.
• During the second quarter, La Salle held the edge in shots (6-2), shots on goal (3-2) and penalty corners (4-0).
• All four of the Friars' shot attempts in the first half of play were on target).
3RD QUARTER:
• The third quarter featured one shot attempt, which was logged by the Friars'
Hannah McKenney at 33:14.
• The Friars carried their 1-0 advantage into the fourth quarter.
4TH QUARTER:
• Providence withstood a flurry of four-straight offensive corners by La Salle with under four minutes to play.
• The Explorers kept up offensive pressure and cracked the scoring column with just 12-seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game, 1-1.
• Tatum Johnson was credited with the goal and the two sides headed to overtime.
• La Salle outshot Providence 5-0 in the frame.
OVERTIMES / SHOOTOUT:
• In the first overtime,
Asia Porter recorded four saves to keep the score level at 1-1.
• Neither team found the back of the cage, forcing a second overtime session.
• In the second overtime, La Salle was awarded three penalty corners, including two as time expired.
• La Salle got two shots off, with Porter making one save. The other shot sailed wide and the match moved on to a shootout.
• The two teams needed a second round of shootouts to decide the game, eventually earning the victory with a 2-1 advantage.
NOTES:
• Today's match marked the third overtime game of the season and first game decided in a shootout. The Friars previously fell to Old Dominion (2-1, OT) and defeated Connecticut (2-1, 2OT).
• Through 80 minutes of play, LaSalle led in shots (20-7), shots on goal (11-6) and corners (15-0).
• La Salle outshot Providence 8-2 in the 20 minutes played during the two overtimes.
• The Friars conclude the season with a 10-8 record. Providence's 10 wins are the most for the program since 2019.
