Bryce Hopkins Named To The Preseason Karl Malone Award Watchlist

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (October 26) that Providence Junior Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park,III.) was one of 20 players named to the watchlist for the Karl Malone Award by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, an annual honor in its 10th year, recognizes the top power forward in Division 1 men's college basketball.

Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, in each of the three rounds beginning Friday, October 27. In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2024 Karl Malone Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February, to just five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Malone and the Hall of Fame's selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The winner of the 2024 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward), and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women's Starting Five.

Hopkins was one of five players who were a finalist last year for the Karl Malone Award in 2022-23. Hopkins was recently named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason First Team.  He also has earned Preseason All-America honors from College Hoops Today and CBS Sports.
 
Last season, Hopkins started all 33 games in his first season with the Friars. Hopkins, who earned First Team ALL-BIG EAST honors in 2022-23, led the Friars in scoring (15.8 ppg), rebounding (8.5), and double-doubles (10). He was tied for sixth in scoring and he was second in rebounding amongst BIG EAST players in overall action. Hopkins also ranked third in the league in defensive rebounds (226, 6.8 rpg) and fourth in minutes played (34.9 mpg). In BIG EAST action, he finished third in scoring (16.7 ppg) and rebounding (8.6 rpg). He posted a team-best 10 double-doubles, including a 29-point, 23-rebound, three-steal effort in a double-overtime win over Marquette (103-98) on December 20, 2022. Hopkins' 20-20 game was the 34th in program history. For his efforts, Hopkins also earned 2023 Associated Press ALL-BIG EAST First Team honors, USBWA District 1 Honors and NABC All-District 5 First Team accolades.
