Women’s Soccer Set To Close Out Regular Season Play

The Friars play at Villanova on Thursday, October 26 at 3:30 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's soccer team will close out the regular season against Villanova on Thursday, October 26 at 3:30 p.m. in Villanova, Pa. The Friars will then prepare for the BIG EAST Tournament that begins on Sunday, October 29.

SCOUTING THE FRIARS… Providence enters Thursday with an 8-3-5 overall record and a 3-1-5 record in the BIG EAST. The Friars are currently in fourth place in the BIG EAST with 14 points. Most recently, the Friars tied No. 20 Xavier, 0-0, on October 19 and were defeated by UConn, 2-1, on October 22.
 
Senior Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) leads Providence's offense with 16 points through 16 games. Hughes currently ranks third in the BIG EAST in goals with eight. She now ranks in the top-six all-time in career scoring at Providence College with 59 points.
 
Kyla Gallagher (Stamford, Conn.), Gillian Kenney (Hanover, Mass.) and Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) each have nine points for Providence. Briggs currently ranks second in the BIG EAST in assists per game, averaging 0.5.
 
Goalkeepers Emma Bodmer (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.) occupy the first and fifth spots for save percentage in the BIG EAST. Bodmer has a save percentage of .900 while McElroy has a save percentage of .844.
 
THREE MEMBERS OF THE FRIARS QUALIFY FOR THE 2024 FIFA UNDER-20 WORLD CUP… Two sophomores, Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) and Thaea Mouratidis (Scarborough, Canada), and incoming freshman Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada) have qualified for the 2024 FIFA Under-20 World Cup with Canada Soccer's Under-20 Women's National Team. The team earned a third-place finish at the Concacaf Women's Under-20 Championship after defeating Costa Rica, 5-3, in the third-place game.
 
MEG HUGHES NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST TEAM… Hughes was the lone Friar to receive preseason recognition as a member of the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. This is Hughes' third year in a row being named to the Preseason ALL-BIG EAST Team. Hughes has played 62 career games for the Friars and has totaled 57 points on 22 goals and 13 assists. She currently ranks sixth on the Friars' all-time scoring list.
 
KAYLA BRIGGS NAMED OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK… Briggs was named Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, Oct.16 for the second time this season. She recorded the game-winning goal against Marquette and marked an assist in the game at No. 22 Georgetown.
 
AVERY SNEAD EARNS BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL… Avery Snead(Wrentham, Mass.) earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Oct. 16. She was a key player in the defensive line, allowing only one goal in two games for the Friars. Snead registered 180 minutes through the two games, recording four shots for the Friars.
  
NEWCOMERS…Providence welcomes nine student-athletes to the program this season including three graduate transfers and six freshmen. The three graduate transfers are Corinne Dente (Stamford, Conn.), Emma Derry (Leominster, Mass.), and Katherine McElroy (Brookline, Mass.). Dente played 37 career games at forward for University of Louisville totaling two goals and one assist. Derry started 50 of her 59 career games on the backline for the University of Rhode Island where she registered two assists. McElroy was a four-year member of the women's soccer program at the University of Michigan where she appeared in goal for five games during the 2022 season.
 
The incoming freshman class includes Kayla Briggs (Toronto, Canada), Araceli Cloutier (Bedford, N.H.), Marryn Gruhn (Northport, N.Y.), Samantha Kolb (Long Beach, N.Y.), Naiya McFarlane (Ajax, Canada), and Ava Ripanti (Townsend, Del.).
 
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST VILLANOVA… The Friars hold a 16-13-3 all-time record against Villanova. Last season, Providence tied Villanova, 1-1, in Providence, R.I. In their last 11 matches, the Friars are 9-1-1.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS… Villanova enters Thursday with a 4-6-7 overall record and a 1-6-2 record in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats are currently in last place in the BIG EAST with five points. Last week Villanova was defeated by UConn (4-0) and DePaul (1-0). 
 
Jackie Richards ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in goals, with six and has added one assist. She is followed by teammate Makayla Stadler who ranks sixth in the BIG EAST  in goals, with five. Megan Donnelly ranks third in the BIG EAST in assists, with five. Goalkeeper Payton Woodward has started all 17 games and has a goal against average of 1.12 and save percentage of .703. 
 
UP NEXT… The Friars will play in the first round of the BIG EAST tournament on Sunday, October 29. Time and location are TBD.
