The Friar women finished third while the men finished sixth.
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams competed at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday, Sept. 30 in Bethlehem, Pa. The No. 15 Friar women finished third out of 46 teams (176 points). The men finished sixth out of 46 teams (215 points).
The women's side was led by freshman Jane Buckley (Cork, Ireland). Buckley finished strong with a seventh-place finish in a time of 19:40.8. It marked her first collegiate race. Fellow Friars senior Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) and junior Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) held competitive positions for the duration of the race. Tuck had a 37th-place finish (20:14.8), while Mooney finished right behind her in 38th-place (20:16.6). Junior Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) and freshman Niamh O'Mahony (Kerry, Ireland) rounded out the top five, finishing in 43rd (20:19.4) and 51st (20:26.1), respectively.
"Great start to her college career from Jane [Buckley]," Head Coach Ray Treacy said. "Lilly [Tuck] and Shannon [Flockhart] were battling colds but held together well to keep the team in 3rd place."
For the men, the Friars were led by a 12th- place finish (23:17.3) by junior Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand). Graduate student David Principe Jr. (Johnston, R.I.) and sophomore Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) finished the Paul Short Invitational in 14th (23.18.0) and 46th (23:37.1), respectively. Rounding out the Friars' top five were junior Shane Coffey (Naas, Ireland) in 60th place (23:43.8) and sophomore Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) in 89th place (23:55.4). Graduate student Marcelo Rocha did not finish the race.
"An improved performance with the men from our home meet," Treacy said. "Still much room for improvement though."
The Friars will return to action when they travel to Madison, Wis. on Oct. 14 for the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational.
