Asia Porter was also honored with a spot on the weekly honor roll.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College field hockey student-athlete Niamh Gowing (Dublin, Ireland) was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week today [Sept. 20]. Teammate Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass.) landed a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The two players helped guide the Friars to a 2-0 record last week, including a 5-2 victory over Villanova to open the conference slate.

Gowing, a forward, paced the Friars' offense through two games last weekend with six points on two goals and two assists. She notched one goal and two assists in the Friars' 5-2 victory over Villanova Sept. 16. It marked the first multi-assist game of her career. On Sept. 18 against Bucknell, Gowing scored the lone goal in regulation for the Friars and went on to convert her opportunity in the penalty shootout to give the Friars a 2-1 victory (2OT/SO).

Porter, a goalkeeper, backstopped the Friars to a 2-0 weekend. She held Villanova to just one goal in the field of play, while making two saves. The Wildcats other goal came off of a penalty stroke. To close the weekend against Bucknell, Porter was sensational in a 2-1 victory over Bucknell in a shootout. She registered 12 saves in regulation and overtime and added a critical stop in the penalty shootout to ensure the Friar victory.

The Friars return to action on Friday, Sept. 23 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The game is scheduled to be played in Washington, D.C. at 1:00 p.m.
