Volleyball Defeats Holy Cross In Straight Sets

Sammie Ruggles notched a double-double for the second-straight match.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team defeated Holy Cross in straight sets on Aug. 27 at the Iona Tournament in New Rochelle, N.Y. The Friars closed the tournament with a 2-1 record.
 
TEAM RECORDS:
Providence: 2-1
Holy Cross: 0-3

FIRST SET HIGHLIGHTS:  Providence took the first set, 25-16.
- Emma Nelson (West Chester, Pa.) paced the Friars offensively, tallying five kills on seven attempts, to record a 0.714 hitting percentage.
- The Friars registered four serve aces.
- Brielle Mullally (Garden Grove, Calif.) and Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.) contributed four digs apiece.
- The Friars maintained a comfortable lead for the majority of the set, going on a 7-3 run to take the victory.

SECOND SET HIGHLIGHTS:  Providence snatched the win in a second-set thriller, 25-20.
- The set featured eight lead changes.
- Providence went on a 9-3 run, scoring four-straight points to end the set.
- Sammie Ruggles (North Olmstead, Ohio) notched 12 assists, giving her 24 in the match.
- Shaliyah Rhoden (Rowlett, Texas) and Kayla Grant (Rowlett, Texas) each added three kills, taking their totals to seven and six, respectively.

THIRD SET HIGHLIGHTS:  The Friars closed out the day with a 25-21 victory in the third.
- After a mid-set timeout by PC, the Friars battled back from a deficit to score four-straight points and earned their first lead of the set.
- Taylor collected eight digs, bringing her total to 15 in the match. Ruggles recorded six digs and Mullally added four.
- Rhoden tallied five kills, Grant added one to bring her hitting percentage to a team-best 0.545.

MATCH NOTES:
- The Friars had 45 kills in the match, led by Shaliyah Rhoden (12), Emma Nelson (10) and Brielle Mullally (eight).
- Three Friars, Taylor, Mullally and Ruggles, had double digit digs.
- The team combined for 10 service aces.
- Ruggles posted a double-double for the second time in three matches, marking the first double-doubles of her career. She finished the day with 32 assists and 13 digs.
- The Friars improved to 2-1 on the season.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Providence College volleyball team will be on the road again next weekend for the UTA Classic at the University of Texas Arlington in Arlington, Texas. The Friars will face off against Texas A&M University-Commerce on Friday, Sept. 2 at 12:00 p.m. (ET) before their match against University of North Texas later that afternoon (5:00 p.m. ET). Providence will play host UT Arlington on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 12:00 p.m. (ET).
