Friars Looking To Capture Third BIG EAST Title: In the Friars' 43-year history at the BIG EAST Tournament, the team has captured the BIG EAST Championship title twice - 1994 and 2014. When they captured their first title, the Friars defeated Georgetown, 74-64, on March 13, 1994 in the championship game. In 2014, Providence earned a 65-58 win over Creighton in the championship game. The Friars also reached the BIG EAST title game in 2018, where the team was defeated in overtime by Villanova, 76-66.
Friars In The BIG EAST Semifinals: The Friars are in the BIG EAST Semifinals for the first time since 2018 and the 12th time overall. The Friars have posted a 3-8 mark all-time in the Semifinals, including a 2-2 record under Ed Cooley. This will mark the first meeting all-time between the Friars and the Bluejays in the BIG EAST Semifinals.
Friars To Face Creighton On March 11: The Friars will play Creighton on Friday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. on FS1 in the BIG EAST Semifinals. Providence has posted an 18-12 mark all-time versus the Bluejays, including a 12-9 record since Creighton joined the BIG EAST in 2013-14. The Friars are 10-4 at home versus Creighton, 6-6 on the road and 2-2 in neutral arenas. The first game between the two teams this season was canceled due to Covid within the Providence program on January 11. The last time the two teams met, the Friars defeated the Bluejays, 72-51, on February 26. With the win, the Friars captured the BIG EAST Regular Season Title. The Friar have posted a 2-1 mark all-time versus Creighton in the BIG EAST Tournament, including a 65-58 win to capture the 2014 BIG EAST Championship. In other two matchups, the Friars were defeated 70-58 on March 9, 2017 and Providence earned a 72-68 win in overtime on March 8, 2018.
How The Friars Got Here: The Friars defeated Creighton, 72-51, on February 26. With the win, the Friars clinched their first ever BIG EAST Regular Season Championship. The Friars posted a program best 14 league wins. The Friars are No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament.
Watson And Bynum Named All-BIG EAST Second Team: It was announced on March 6 that graduate student center Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) and junior guard Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) each earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. It marks the second consecutive year that the Friars have had two players earn all-league honors as Watson and David Duke received Second Team accolades last season.
Bynum Earns BIG EAST Sixth Man Award: It was announced on March 7 that Providence junior guard Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) earned the BIG EAST Sixth Man Award. Bynum becomes the first Friar to earn the honor.
Cooley Named BIG EAST Coach Of The Year: It was announced on March 9 at Madison Square Garden in New York that Providence's Ed Cooley was named BIG EAST Coach Of The Year. Cooley, who is the first Friar coach in the 43-year history of the league to earn the honor, has guided the Friars to a 24-4 mark. In BIG EAST league play, the Friars set a team record for wins after registering a 14-3 mark and capturing the program's first BIG EAST Regular Season title. The Friars, who finished in first place, were picked to finish seventh in the annual BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll which was released in October.
Ed Cooley Named A Semifinalist for Naismith Coach Of The Year: It was announced today on March 10 that Providence's Ed Cooley was named one of 10 Semifinalist for the Werner Ladder Naismith Coach Of The Year Award. Cooley joins Mark Adams (Texas Tech), John Calipari (Kentucky), Scott Drew (Baylor), Steve Forbes (Wake Forest), Greg Gard (Wisconsin), Tommy Lloyd (Arizona), Matt McMahon (Murray State), Bruce Pearl (Auburn), and Kelvin Sampson (Houston) as Semifinalists. On March 23, the list of 10 Semifinalist will be cut to four Finalist with the winner being announced on April 3.
Friars Ranked No. 11/10 In The Nation: The Providence College men's basketball team is ranked No. 11 in the Associated Press Poll and No. 10 in the most recent Coaches Poll. Both polls were released on March 7. The Friars, who entered the polls on December 20 at No. 22/23, have been ranked for 12 consecutive weeks. The Friars were ranked No. 9/8 in both polls last week.
Friars In Overtime: The Friars recorded a 3-0 record in overtime games this season. On February 23, the Friars defeated Xavier, 99-92, in triple overtime. They have registered a 71-67 mark all-time in overtime games.
Providence College Basketball: The 2021-22 campaign marks the 95th season of basketball at Providence College. Since the program started in 1926-27, Providence has posted a 1,520-1,012 mark, good for a .600 winning percentage. The Friars have made the NCAA Tournament 20 times and the National Invitation Tournament on 20 occasions.
