No. 9 Women's Hockey To Host Merrimack In Two-Game Home Series

The Friars are currently 13-4-1 overall and 9-3-1 in Hockey East play.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The No. 9 women's hockey team will host Merrimack College for a two-game home series on Friday, Dec. 2 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
 
Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 13-4-1 overall and 9-3-1 in Hockey East play. The Friars are coming off a weekend
win over Brown University. Providence defeated the Brown Bears, 4-3, on Saturday, Nov. 26.
 
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) finished the day with 11 saves and currently holds a .945 save percentage
with a 1.38 GAA this season. Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden), Rachel Weiss (Calgary,
Alberta), and Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) led the Friars in points, each scoring one goal and earning an assist.

As of Nov. 28, the Friars are ranked No. 9 in the most recent USCHO NCAA Women's Hockey rankings. Providence received 116 votes.
 
Hockey East Award Winners
Sara Hjalmarsson was named Hockey East Player of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Hjalmarsson was recognized for having a four-goal game against Maine on Nov. 19.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Stop It Goaltender of the Week as announced on Nov. 21. Abstreiter was recognized for tallying her sixth shutout this season and 63 saves over the weekend.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month as announced on Nov. 2. Kirchmair was recognized for leading the Friars in goals with seven and leading all of Hockey East in goals among freshman.
 
Kirchmair was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week as announced on Oct. 24. Kirchmair was recognized for earning two goals over the weekend. She has recorded seven goals and two assists across eight season games. She leads the Friars in goals and is second in points with nine.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 17. Abstreiter was recognized for another shutout weekend against Holy Cross. With a combined 25 saves she is the first goalie in program history to tally four-consecutive shutouts.
 
Abstreiter was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Week as announced on Oct. 10. Abstreiter was recognized after a shutout weekend over Union College and RPI, posting a combined 35 saves.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason Poll, which was released on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Providence received 61 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (90), Vermont (79) and Boston College (76). The Huskies, who won the 2022 Hockey East Tournament, received nine first place votes.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence welcomes seven new players (three transfers and four freshmen) to the roster for the 2022-23 season. Noemi Neubauerova (Prague, Czech Republic) is a graduate student from Colgate University. Ida Press (Uppsala, Sweden) is a graduate student from University of Maine. Rachel Weiss (Calgary, Alberta) is a junior from Penn State. The four freshmen are Mégane Quirion (Saint-Eustahce, Quebec), Kayla Kutes (Kirkland, Wa.), Reichen Kirchmair (Oakville, Ontario) and Cristina Cavaliere (Mississauga, Ontario).
 
Captains Named
Graduate student Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) was named captain for the 2022-23 season, along with alternate captains Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) a graduate student, senior Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine), and graduate student Hunter Barnett (Caledon, Ontario).
 
Scouting the Warriors
Merrimack currently holds a 5-10-1 overall record with a 4-9-1 conference record. The Warriors' last matchup
was against Vermont on Thursday, Nov. 17 and Friday, Nov. 18. Vermont swept Merrimack with a 5-1 win on
Nov. 17 and a 3-0 win on Nov. 18. As a team, Merrimack averages 21.1 shots per game and hold a .16 conversion
rate on power plays with a 42.2 faceoff success percentage.
 
Who to Watch
Senior Katie Kaufman leads the Warriors in points with 11 and in goals with six. Kaufman, juniors Hannah Corneliusen and Raice Szott are tied for the team-high of five assists.
 
Senior goaltender Emma Gorski has played in 10 games for the Warriors this season. Gorski has recorded 277
saves this season for a .899 save percentage and a 3.07 GAA. Freshman goaltender Calli Hogarth has played in
eight games and has recorded 199 saves for a .926 save percentage and a 2.67 GAA.
 
All Time Series with the Warriors
Providence leads the all-time series record against Merrimack, 18-1-2. Providence defeated Merrimack, 3-0, in
their last matchup on Feb. 15, 2022.
