Friars Defeat Dayton In Season Opener, 69-60

Janai Crooms paced four Friars in double figures with 20 points and reached the 1,000-point career milestone.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.
 – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Dayton, 69-60, in the 2022-23 season opener on Nov. 7 in Providence, R.I. Janai Crooms paced four Friars in double figures with 20 points and added a game-high nine rebounds.
 
RECORDS:
Dayton – 0-1
Providence – 1-0
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Friars used a 7-0 run to take a 9-2 lead at the media timeout (4:52).
• Senior guard Janai Crooms scored five of the Friars' seven points in the run.
• Dayton came out of the break to score seven straights to tie the game, 9-9.
• Junior guard Brynn Farrell knocked down a three to halt the Flyers' run and Crooms added a bucket in transition (14-9) with 1:42 left in the frame.
• Providence outscored Dayton 9-2 over the final 3:19 of the quarter and held an 18-11 lead at the break.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence outscored Dayton 8-6 through the midway point of the second quarter to claim a 26-17 lead (4:52).
• The Friars took a 29-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Crooms paced Providence with 10 points and four rebounds, while Nayo Lear led Dayton with 11 points.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The Friars started the third quarter with a 6-2 spurt, forcing a Flyers timeout with 7:05 on the clock (35-23).
• The Friars held their largest lead of the night (43-29) with 3:30 left in the quarter, but Dayton cut the deficit to single digits with a 6-0 run.
• Providence took a 47-37 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• A 5-0 Dayton run made it a five-point game with 6:30 left in regulation.
• Back-to-back buckets by Farrell and Olivia Olsen helped stem the tide and put the Friars back up by nine (57-48).
• The Flyers got it back to five on a three by Destiny Bohanon with 3:27 to play, but a Grace Efosa pull-up jumper and a traditional three-point play by Olsen helped Providence regain a double-digit lead (65-55).
• Crooms and Efosa combined for a 4-4 performance from the foul line in the final minute and Providence maintained its composure for a 69-60 lead.
 
NOTES:
• Providence improved to 33-16 all-time in home openers and 29-20 all-time in season openers.
• Crooms finished the night with a team-best 20 points, marking the 51st double-digit game of her career and sixth career game of 20 or more points.
• Crooms converted a lay-up at the 7:41 mark of the third quarter to become the 37th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point career milestone.

• The Friars led wire-to-wire and it marked their first win over Dayton in the series (1-2).
• Olsen scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half and added seven rebounds and one blocked shot.
• Efosa and Farrell each netted 10 points in the victory.
• The Friars held a 20-6 edge on the scoreboard in points off of turnovers.
• Providence held a 41-38 advantage on the glass.

• The Friars return to action on Friday, Nov. 11 against Stonehill. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I.
