Ed Croswell led the Friars in scoring with 17 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Merrimack College, 71-57, on Wednesday, Nov. 23 at the Amica Mutual Pavillion in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 4-2 this season. Redshirt-Senior Ed Croswell (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the way for the Friars with 17 points and seven rebounds. Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) recorded his first double-double as a Friar with 12 points and 10 rebounds. 
 
"Happy to get the win after a few losses over the weekend," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "Devin Carter and Ed Croswell gave us some good effort. We will keep working to get better"
 
FIRST HALF:
  • Noah Locke (Baltimore, Md.) hit a floater from the inside of the free throw line to start the scoring for the Friars.
  • The Friars held a 6-3 lead at the first media timeout.
  • Merrimack's Mykel Derring scored the first five points for the Warriors.
  • Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill) ended the Friars three minute scoring drought with a coast-to-coast layup after a defensive rebound. Ensuring the Friars' lead at the second media timeout, 12-7. 
  • Locke buried the first Friars' three-pointer of the night from the left corner from a penetrating Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.). 
  • At the 8:28 mark, Pierre stole the ball and found Croswell for the slam dunk. PC led 21-10. 
  • With 3:29 to go in the half, Hopkins ended a 7-0 Merrimack run with a turnaround jump shot. PC held the lead, 27-21.  
  • With 1:44 remaining, Croswell hit a layup to give Providence their largest lead of the half of 35-21.
  • Providence led 37-26 at the half. 
  • Providence shot 16-31 (51.6%) from the field, 1-6 (16.7%) from three and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free throw line. 
  • Merrimack shot 8-19 (42.1%) from the field, 3-6 (50.0%) from three and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
  • Locke scored the opening two buckets of the half for the Friars'.
  • After the first media timeout of the half, Pierre found Carter for an alley-oop dunk.
  • At the 11:31 mark, Providence capitalized in transition off a Pierre steal, turning into a dunk for Clifton Moore (Ambler Pa.).
  • At the third media timeout Providence would lead, 55-48.
  • The Friars' went on a 9-3 run fueled by layups from Croswell and Hopkins capped off by a Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) three-pointer to give the Friars a 64-51 lead heading into the final media timeout. 
  • Providence sealed the win with a Carter layup giving the largest lead of the game of 17 points with 14 remaining. 
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Providence finished 29-60 (48.3%) from the field, 3-11(27.3%) from three and 10-14 (71.4%) from the free throw line. 
  • Merrimack finished 20-52 (38.5%) from the field, 10-23 (43.5%) from three and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.  
  • Four players finished in double figures for the Friars, in Croswell (17), Locke (14), Hopkins(13) and Carter (12). 
  • Providence outrebounded the Warriors, 43-21.
  • The Friars dominated the paint, outshooting Merrimack, 50-18. 
  • Bynum led the way with a game-high six assists. 
  • Carter snagged a game-high 10 boards.
  • Ziggy Reid led the way for the Warriors with 21 points.
  • Attendance – 8,269
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
  • The Friars will take on Columbia University on Saturday, Nov. 26 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. on FS2. 
  • Providence holds a 3-0 all time series lead against Columbia. In their last matchup, the Friars earned an 81-55 triumph on Nov. 28, 2006.
