NEW YORK, N.Y. – The BIG EAST announced its annual women's soccer awards today (Nov. 2). Providence College junior
Meg Hughes (Rochester, Mass.) and senior
Alexis Rothmann (Norwell, Mass.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. Additionally, freshman
Ella McBride (Peterborough, Canada) earned BIG EAST All-Freshman Team honors.
Prior to the start of the season, Hughes was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. This marks the third-consecutive year that Hughes has earned BIG EAST postseason accolades. She was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors in 2020-21. In 2021, Hughes was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Hughes appeared in all 18 games for the Friars in 2022. She finished second on the team in scoring with seven points on two goals and three assists.
Rothmann has received BIG EAST postseason recognition on each of the last three seasons. She became the youngest player in program history to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors in 2020-21 as a sophomore. In 2021, Rothmann was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. She played a pivotal role for the Friars in the midfield starting in all 14 games she appeared in. Rothmann played 1,200 minutes in the midfield overall and scored a goal against Boston College (Sept. 8).
McBride appeared in her first collegiate game on Oct. 2 against Creighton after recovering from an injury prior to the start of the season. She played over 520 minutes at forward through eight games. McBride scored her first collegiate goal against Marquette on Oct. 13.
All-BIG EAST Teams and major awards are voted on by the league's head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams are comprised of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders and one goalkeeper and one at-large selection. The BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognizes the top-11 freshman vote earners. Extra players may be added if there was a tie in voting.
