Croswell led all scorers with 18 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated Assumption University, 106-69, on Saturday, Oct. 29 in an exhibition game at the Amica Mutual Pavillion in Providence, R.I. Graduate student Ed Croswell (Philadelphia, Pa.) led all scorers with 18 points on a perfect 7-7 from the field. Sophomore Bryce Hopkins (Oak Park, Ill.) added 17 points and six rebounds. Six Friars finished in double figures in the game. 

"I thought we improved from our last outing," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "We wanted to play some guys more minutes today and see how we would execute. I was very happy about our ball movement, and overall our team got better."

FIRST HALF:

  • Croswell opened the game with a contested layup. Hopkins buried a three-pointer on the next possession.
  • The Friars scored on each of their first seven possessions. 
  • After trailing early in the game, the Friars scored 10 unanswered points to take a 17-8 lead.
  • With 12:13 remaining in the half, Hopkins hauled in the rebound and went coast-to-coast for the layup. The Friars held a 29-13 lead following a 22-5 scoring run. 
  • Assumption made back-to-back three-pointers, ending a cold spell with less than seven minutes in the half. PC led 36-22. 
  • At the 4:05 mark, Hopkins knocked down his third three-ball to give the Friars a 20-point lead. PC led 45-25. 
  • Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) made it into the scoring column with a three-pointer at the 2:26 mark. The basket capped off a 10-0 run for the Friars. PC led by 25, their largest lead of the half. 
  • The Greyhounds responded with a scoring run of their own, scoring seven unanswered to finish the half. 
  • Hopkins was the only player to notch double figures in the first half, with 15 points on 6-8 from the field. 
  • Providence shot 19-34 (55.9%) from the field, 5-11 (45.5%) from three and 7-10 (70.0%) from the free throw line. 
  • Assumption shot 12-36 (33.3%) from the field, 6-18 (33.3%) from three and 2-5 (40.0%) from the free throw line. 

SECOND HALF:

  • Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) scored four of the first five baskets of the second half for the Friars. 
  • The Friars opened the half on a hot streak from deep, with two three-pointers from Bynum and one from Devin Carter (Miami, Fla.) and Noah Locke (Baltimore, Md.).
  • Providence outscored Assumption 24-6 before the first media timeout of the half. Croswell capped off the sequence with a two-handed slam above a Greyhound defender.
  • PC took a timeout at the 9:07 mark, leading 84-50. Assumption had made four of their last five shot attempts.
  • The Friar offense continued to flourish as the second half progressed, with Croswell and Hopkins leading the way. At the final media timeout, the Friars led 97-62. 
  • Clifton Moore (Ambler, Pa.) and Jayden Pierre (Elizabeth, N.J.) contributed on offense in the final minutes of the game. 

NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Providence finished 40-62 (64.5%) from the field, 11-21 (52.4%) from three and 15-21 (71.4%) from the free throw line. 
  • Assumption finished 27-69 (39.1%) from the field, 10-29 (34.5%) from three and 5-10 (50.0%) from the free throw line. 
  • The Friars out-rebounded the Greyhounds by a margin of 50-20. 
  • Croswell and Rafael Castro (Dover, N.J.) hauled in a game-high eight rebounds each. 
  • Bynum and Carter accounted for half of the Friars' 18 assists. 
  • Castro had a game-high four blocks. 
  • Cooper Creek led the way for Assumption with 12 points and six rebounds (both team-highs). Creek made a game-high four three-pointers. 
  • Attendance – 3,656

WHAT'S NEXT:

  • The Friars will take on Rider University in the season opener on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. on FS1. 
  • Providence holds a 4-1 all-time record against Rider. In the last matchup, the Friars earned an 88-84 home victory on Nov. 29, 2017.
