PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College will host the 2022 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships presented by JEEP, which will be held at the Mark Coogan Course at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. on Saturday, Oct. 29. It will mark the first time in the 43-year history of the league that the Friars will host the championship.
The BIG EAST Cross Country Championship, which is free to the public, will commence with the women's race at 11:00 a.m. ET, followed by the men's race at 11:50 a.m. The Mark Coogan Course will hold the championship for the first time. The Friars have hosted the Friar Invitational for the past two years at the Mark Coogan Course.
The BIG EAST Digital Network will produce the broadcast of the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. Jordan Man and Sam Roecker will serve as analysts on the broadcast and Mike Mancuso will call all the action.
This season, the Friars have remained present in national and regional rankings. The men are currently ranked fourth in the Northeast region and have received votes in national rankings. The Villanova men's team holds the No.17 spot in national rankings currently, along with Georgetown at No.28.
The Friar women, who have won eight BIG EAST Cross Country titles, claimed No.15 in the nation and No.1 in regional rankings early this fall season and currently sit at No.16 and No.2, respectively. The Georgetown women are also present in the national rankings at No.13, and returns defending individual champion, Maggie Donahue, who posted a time of 20:47.8 at last year's championship.
The Providence College men's team, which has captured 15 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships, return three of their top five scorers from the 2021 BIG EAST Championships.
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) placed fourth,
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) placed eighth, and
Abdel Laadjel (Lucan, Ireland) placed 24
th. Three of the top five female scorers also returned this season for the Friars.
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) placed ninth at the championship, Lily Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) placed 16
th, and
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) finished 17
th.
