PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams return to action on Friday, September 24 at the Coast-to-Coast Battle of Beantown, hosted by Boston College. The race will be held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The women's race will start at 3 p.m., followed by the men's race at 3:30 p.m. The combined race will start at 4:15 p.m. The Friar women enter the race ranked 26
th nationally and second in the Northeast Region. The men's team comes in ranked fifth in the Northeast Region.
The women will be led by sophomore
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) and junior
Lilly Tuck. In the first meet of the season (Friar Invitational), Mooney and Tuck finished first (17:51.31) and second (17:51.38).
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland),
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) and
Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) also had big finishes for the Friars, placing third (17:58.20), fifth (18:12.28) and seventh (18:25.29), respectively.
On the women's side, they will be competing against 20 teams, including, several nationally ranked teams -- No. 13 North Carolina and No. 22 Connecticut.
For the men, Providence will be led by graduate student
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.), who earned BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week after his first-place performance at the Friar Invitational (24:29.64). The Friars will also be led by graduate students
David McGlynn (Waterford, Ireland),
Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.) and
David Rosas (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.), who finished third (25:10.01), eighth (25:31.55) and 11
th place (25:42.32) finishes, respectively. Sophomore
Liam Back (New Plymouth, New Zealand) also scored for the Friars, placing sixth (25:24.45).
Friar graduate student
AJ Ernst (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) will be joining the lineup and making their season debuts this weekend. Ernst returns after posting an eleventh-place (3:43.14) finish at the NCAA Championships in June in the 1,500 meters, earning All-American honors. This will be Morgan's first collegiate race.
On the men's side, they will be competing against 19 teams, including nationally ranked No. 6 Arkansas.
