Providence, R.I.— Providence College women's soccer Head Coach
Sam Lopes released the team's 2021 fall schedule today (July 19).The 18-game slate includes match-ups against three teams who qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2020-21 and four teams who finished inside the top-50 in the NCAA RPI at the conclusion of the season (May 17).
The Friars will open up the 2021 season in an Ocean State battle against the University of Rhode Island on August 19 in Kingston, R.I. Providence then will return to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium for their home opener against the Sacred Heart Pioneers. Last season, the Friars dominated on home turf with an undefeated record of 5-0-2.
Three of Providence's next five matches are scheduled to be played on the road, beginning with a match-up against 2020-21 NCAA Tournament team, Rutgers University (Aug. 29). The Scarlet Knights lost in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and ended with an overall record of 9-3-4.
On Sept. 16, the Friars will return home to face cross-town rival Brown to conclude their non-conference portion of the schedule.
Providence opens BIG EAST Conference play with two home games against Xavier (Sept. 23) and Creighton (Sept. 26). Due to the abbreviated divisional schedule last season, this will be the first time since 2019 that the Friars face both of these Midwest teams.
On Oct. 3,
the Friars will travel to Washington D.C. to face the defending BIG EAST Champion Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas won their fourth-straight BIG EAST Championship in an overtime win last season and finished fourth in the NCAA RPI. The Friars last 15 of 17 match-ups with the Hoyas have been decided by one goal or less. On March 25, both teams remained scoreless in double overtime with the game ending in a tie.
Providence will then travel to play Villanova (Oct. 7) before returning for a lone home contest against Marquette (Oct. 10). The Friars will then hit the road again for a two-game road trip against Butler (Oct. 14) in Indianapolis, Ind. and St. John's (Oct. 17) in Queens, N.Y.
The Friars will then wrap up their season with two out of their last three games at Anderson Stadium. Providence will first face UConn at home (Oct. 21) before heading out to Chicago, Ill. to play the DePaul Blue Demons (Oct. 24). The Friars will then wrap up conference play in Providence on Oct. 28 against Seton Hall. Last season, the Friars earned the season sweep against the Pirates.
The BIG EAST saw two teams finish inside the top-50 of the NCAA RPI alongside Providence (No. 41). Georgetown led the group at No. 4, followed by Butler at No. 13.
Providence completed the abbreviated 2020-21 season with an 7-2-3 overall record, including a 5-2-3 mark during BIG EAST action.
