PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College women's ice hockey senior
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) and former Friar Genevîeve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) have been named to their home country's Selection Camp rosters for chance to compete in the 2021 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. The tournament, which features 10 nations, will run from May 6-16 in Halifax and Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada.
This season, Abstreiter made 21 starts in net in leading the Friars to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. The netminder held a .929 save percentage and a 2.05 goals against average with 561 total saves and four shutouts. She was named to the Hockey East All-Star Third Team and earned WHCA National Goaltender of the Month (January) and Hockey East Goaltender of the Month (November and December)
During Lacasse's time at Providence, she broke numerous records and captained the team during her senior season. The four-year starter holds records for the most career victories (64), career games played (127), career saves (3,482) and career shutouts (20). She also set Hockey East records for saves in a single tournament (127) and career tournament saves (276).
Canada will compete in Group A with the United States, Finland, Russia, and Switzerland. Germany will compete in Group B with Japan, Czech Republic, Denmark, and Hungary. After a single round-robin series, three teams from each group will advance to the playoff round. Germany's first game is on May 6 against Japan. Canada will play their first game against Finland, also on May 6.
