Geneva, Ohio – The Providence College Friars competed in the fourth and final day of the 2021 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships. Junior
Justin Viotto won the 200-yard butterfly to claim the conference title in the event.
John O'Neill, along with his staff, was named the BIG EAST Men's Swimming Coaching Staff of the Year.
Â
Viotto found himself in third place after the first 50. He remained in third for the next 100 yards as the front three swimmers separated themselves from the rest of the field. Heading into the last 50, Viotto used a fast turn to jump to second place. Viotto trailed only Seton Hall's Justin Oosterwyk. Still trailing after the last turn, Viotto surged down the final stretch to outreach Oosterwyk at the wall. Viotto's 1:48.23 was enough to edge the Pirate by one one-hundredth of a second. The time also improved the junior's program record by nearly one second. Viotto joins
Kevin Hood and Horace Bowden among the ranks of BIG EAST Champions for the Friars men's swimming and diving team.
Â
This is
John O'Neill's first BIG EAST Coach of the Year honor with the men's team and second overall (1988 BIG EAST Women's Coach of the Year). O'Neill is assisted by
Margaret Howe, Newell Roberts, Ken Reall and Andie Rigas.
