PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The United Soccer Coaches All-Region Teams were announced today [Dec. 7] for NCAA Division I Men's Soccer. Four Providence College student-athletes were featured as All-East Region honorees.
Ramzi Qawasmy and
Luis Garcia were named to the All-East Region First Team, while
Paulo Lima and
Gevork Diarbian were selected to the Second Team.
Qawasmy started 20 games as a central defender for the Friars. He recorded three points this season on one goal and one assist. His lone goal of the year was the game winner in a 3-0 victory against cross-city rival Brown (Sept. 22). Qawasmy entered the campaign as a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection and finished off the regular season as a member of the All-BIG EAST First Team. On Sept. 27, he earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week recognition.
Garcia, a 2021 All-BIG EAST Second-Team selection for the Friars as a midfielder, played all 21 games and appeared in the starting line-up 20 times. He finished second among his teammates in points (15), goals (five) and assists (five). Each of his offensive totals marked single-season career highs and two of his five goals were game winners. On Oct. 23, Garcia registered a career-best five points on two goals and one assist during the Friars' 3-0 victory against then-No. 1 and previously unbeaten Georgetown.
Lima, a 2021 All-BIG EAST First-Team honoree, started all 21 games for the Friars in the midfield. He finished the season tied for third on the team in scoring with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Entering the year, Lima was a Preseason All-BIG EAST Team selection. During the season, he claimed BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 11.
Diarbian, a forward, finished the 2021 campaign as an All-BIG EAST Second-Team pick and also was honored as a member of the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. He started all 21 games for the Friars and finished fifth on the team in scoring with 11 points on three goals and five assists. He scored a goal in Providence's BIG EAST Semifinal victory over Butler on Nov. 11 and collected two assists during the Friars' NCAA Tournament run against Marist and Georgetown.
Providence College finished the year with a 12-5-4 overall record, advanced to the 2021 BIG EAST Championship Game for the sixth time and earned an NCAA Tournament berth for the 11
th time in program history. The Friars' NCAA Tournament run landed them in the Round of 16 for the fourth time in program history. Providence defeated Marist in the First Round, 2-0, and then eliminated NCAA defending champion and No. 14 seed Marshall, 2-1, in overtime. The Friars ended Marshall's 22-game unbeaten streak at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, West Virginia. Providence's run ended in the NCAA Third Round against No. 3 seed Georgetown (4-1).
