Friars Fall To Georgetown In BIG EAST Action, 55-47

Alyssa Geary scored a team-best 14 points.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Georgetown in BIG EAST play, 55-47, on Dec. 5 in Providence, R.I. Both teams moved to 1-1 in conference play.
1ST QUARTER:
• Georgetown scored the first six points of the game through the opening 3:40 of play, while the Friars started 0-4 from the field with two turnovers.
• Janai Crooms hit one of two free throws for Providence's first point of the day at the 6:11 mark.
• Alyssa Geary hit a baseline three pointer for the Friars first field-goal at 5:28 to make the score 6-4.
• Georgetown responded with a 5-0 spurt to take an 11-4 edge into the media timeout (3:44).
• The Hoyas held a 14-9 lead heading into the break.
• Geary was 2-3 from beyond the arc for a team-best six point in the first quarter.
2ND QUARTER:
• Both teams struggled offensively to start the second quarter and Georgetown took an 18-12 lead into the media timeout at 4:54.
• Meghan Huerter knocked down a three from the left wing to cap a 5-0 spurt for the Friars, forcing a Georgetown timeout with 1:19 on the clock. The triple got Providence within three (20-17).
• Providence forced a Georgetown turnover and then extended its run to 7-0 with a jumper from Olivia Olsen at the right block (20-19).
• Georgetown scored five-straight points to close the quarter and took a 25-19 lead into halftime.
• Alyssa Geary paced Providence with nine points in the first half, while Kelsey Ransom scored nine points for Georgetown.
3RD QUARTER:
• Lauren Sampson opened the third with a baseline three to get the Friars back within three 40-seconds into the action (25-22).
• Geary drilled a baseline three moments later to make it a two-point game (27-25) and Emily Archibald got loose in transition to tie the game, 27-27.
• Crooms made it a 7-0 run with a pair of free throws to give Providence its first lead at the 5:50 mark (29-27).
• Georgetown halted the Friars' 8-0 run with back-to-back buckets by Kelsey Ransom, helping the Hoyas regain the lead (31-30) with 4:10 on the clock.
• The Hoyas held a 38-32 lead at the end of the third.
4TH QUARTER:
• The Hoyas held their largest lead (44-35) with 5:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.
• Providence cut the deficit to four (44-39) with a 5-0 run, capped by a traditional three-point play from Audrey Koch at 4:32.
• Georgetown hit a baseline jumper on their next possession, but Sampson rattled home a three for the Friars to get her squad within three (46-43).
• The Hoyas pushed their lead back to eight (52-44) with just under a minute to play, but Sampson gave the Friars life with her third three of the game (52-47).
• Georgetown sealed the game with 3-4 shooting at the foul line down the stretch.
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars were led offensively by Geary's 14 points. She also contributed five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
• Crooms posted double-digit rebounds for the fifth time this season (10) and added seven points, three assists and two steals.
• Sampson finished the day with nine points and two assists.
• Ransom led all scorers in the game with 21 points, while Graceann Bennett chipped in 12 points.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 8 against cross-city rival Brown University. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. at the Pizzitola Sports Center in Providence, R.I. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
