Slow First Quarter Puts Friars In A Hole Against Creighton

Friars fall to the Bluejays 71-56 during BIG EAST action.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team got off to a slow start against BIG EAST foe Creighton on Sunday at Alumni Hall. The Friars trailed 28-11 after the opening 10 minutes, and fought back to within single digits on several occasions, but the deficit proved too great.
 
1ST QUARTER:
Alyssa Geary hit the first bucket of the game for Providence, but Creighton used a 10-1 run over the next 4:59 to take a 10-3 lead into the media timeout.
• The run extended to 15-1 out of the timeout, providing the Bluejays a 15-3 advantage.
Olivia Olsen got the Friars back on the board with a lay-in on the left block at 3:15.
• Creighton used a 7-0 spurt to close the quarter (28-11).
• The Friars committed eight turnovers in the first quarter, leading to 11 points for the Bluejays.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Creighton took a 38-18 lead after hitting its sixth three-pointer of the game with 5:31 remaining in the second.
• Friars came alive with a 10-0 run to get within 38-28 with 3:14 left on the clock.
• Rachael Saunders halted the Friars' run by converting a traditional three-point play at 2:45 (41-28).
• Five-straight points by Janai Crooms got the Friars inside single-digits (41-33) with 1:33 to play.
Mary Baskerville got an offensive put-back for Providence as time expired in the half to make it a 44-36 game at the break.
• Crooms registered 11 points, 11 boards and three assists to pace the Friars.
• Lauren Jensen led all scorers with 17 points for Creighton, while Saunders also cracked double figures with 10 points.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• The 'Jays opened the third with a 5-0 run (49-36).
• Creighton extended its lead to 16, but a 5-0 spurt by Providence got the Friars within 54-43.
• Olsen scored back-to-back buckets for the Friars with under a minute to play to make the score 59-49 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Olsen opened the quarter with her 12th point of the afternoon to get the Friars within single-digits once again (59-51).
• It would be as close as Providence would get the rest of the way as Creighton claimed a 71-56 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Baskerville made her return to the court for the first time since Nov. 28, missing the previous seven games with an injury. She finished with 13 points on 5-9 shooting in just 13 minutes off the bench.
• Olsen had another solid outing for Providence with 12 points on 6-7 shooting from the field.
Kylee Sheppard also made her return for the Friars, having only seen action in two games prior to this afternoon. She contributed eight points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
• Crooms posted her team-best sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. She also added four assists and three blocks.
• Jensen led Creighton with 19 points, while Carly Bachelor (15), Saunders (10) and Molly Mogensen (11) also scored in double figures.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action with a pair of road games against Xavier and Butler. Providence is set to face the Musketeers at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio on Friday, Dec. 31 at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 2, the Friars head to Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. to face the Bulldogs at Noon.
