The Friars made their 11th NCAA Tournament appearance in 2021 and advanced to the Third Round for the fourth time.

PROVIDENCE COLLEGE MEN'S SOCCER | 2021 SEASON REVIEW

RECORD: 12-5-4 (5-2-3 BIG EAST / 2nd Place)

• The Providence College men's soccer team finished the 2021 season with a 12-5-4 overall record, including a 5-2-3 mark in the BIG EAST.

• The team finished second in the BIG EAST Conference and earned the No. 2 seed and a First Round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament. 

• Providence qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament for the 20th time in program history, advanced to its 15th BIG EAST Semifinal and made its sixth BIG EAST Championship Game appearance.

• Providence defeated No. 6-seed Butler, 2-0, in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals on Nov. 11 before falling to top-seeded Georgetown, 2-1, in overtime in the BIG EAST Final on Nov. 14.

• The Friars earned their 11th NCAA Tournament berth in program history and advanced to the Third Round for the fourth time.

• Providence hosted Marist in the NCAA Tournament First Round on Nov. 18 and defeated the Red Foxes, 2-0. Christopher Roman and Armaan Wilson each scored a goal for the Friars. With the victory, Providence improved to 7-0 at home during NCAA Tournament action, including a 3-0 mark at Anderson Stadium.

• The Friars defeated defending NCAA National Champion and No. 14-seed Marshall, 2-1, in double-overtime in the Second Round on Nov. 21 in Huntington, W. Va. Miguel Candela scored in the 85th minute to tie the game, 1-1, and force overtime. The game remained tied after the first 10 minute overtime session, before Davis Smith notched the golden goal in the 104th minute off a feed from Brendan McSorley.

• The Friars' victory in the NCAA Second Round snapped Marshall's 22-game unbeaten streak at Hoops Family Field in Huntington, W. Va., during which Marshall posted a 17-0-5 record. The streak dated back to Sept. 17, 2019.

• Providence fell to No. 7 Georgetown in the NCAA Third Round, 4-1, on Nov. 28 in Washington, D.C. Brendan McSorley scored the Friars' lone goal in the game.

• The Friars were ranked No. 18 in the final regular-season United Soccer Coaches' Poll released on Nov. 9. Providence was ranked inside the top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll for eight-consecutive weeks to close the regular season.

• The Friars were ranked 15th in the final NCAA RPI, released on Nov. 14, prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament.

• Providence was unbeaten at home during the 2021 season, having claimed a 7-0-2 record on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.

• The Friars posted an 11-0-1 record when scoring two-or-more goals in a game. Additionally, the Friars posted a 7-0 mark when scoring three-or-more goals. Providence tallied a season-high six goals against Saint Peter's on Aug. 29.

• Providence posted a 2-1-4 record in overtime during the 2021 season, including a 1-0-3 mark during BIG EAST regular-season play.

• Head Coach Craig Stewart, who completed his 10th season on the sidelines at Providence in 2021, recorded his 100th victory with the Friars on Nov. 11 vs. Butler in the BIG EAST Semifinals. Through all games played during the 2021 campaign, Stewart holds a 102-66-23 record at Providence and owns a 153-74-29 record in his 13 years as a head coach overall.

• Providence led the BIG EAST and ranked 27th in the nation in scoring offense (2.00), 28th in assists per game (2.10), 28th in points per game (6.10) and 19th in total goals (42). The Friars ranked second in the BIG EAST and 17th in the nation in total points (128), 13th in total assists (44) and 25th in goal differential (+17).

Brendan McSorley led the team in scoring with 21 points on nine goals and three assists. Three of his nine goals were game winners. Each of his offensive totals marked single-season career highs.

• Four other Friars reached double figures in the points column, including Luis Garcia (15 points), Davis Smith (12 points), Paulo Lima (12 points) and Gevork Diarbian (12 points).

Gevork Diarbian led the BIG EAST and finished 19th in the nation in shot accuracy, putting 58.1-percent of his shot attempts on target.

Simon Triantafillou led the Friars in assists (six) and finished with eight points overall. 

Lukas Burns was the goalkeeper of record in each of the Friars' 21 games, logging 1974:20 minutes of action in his first season as a member of the starting line-up. He posted a 12-5-4 overall record, including seven shutouts, to go along with a 1.05 goals against average and a 0.729 save percentage.

• Six Friars claimed All-BIG EAST honors during the 2021 season, setting a program record. Paulo Lima and Ramzi Qawasmy were named to the First Team. Gevork Diarbian and Luis Garcia were tabbed Second-Team selections and Davis Smith and Malcolm Duncan were featured on the Third Team.

• Four players earned United Soccer Coaches All-Region accolades. Ramzi Qawasmy and Luis Garcia were named All-East Region First Team, while Paulo Lima and Gevork Diarbian made the Second Team.

Paulo Lima was one of 44 players selected to participate in the MLS College Showcase held on Dec. 10-12 in Cary, N.C.
