Friars Overpower Quinnipiac In Final Non-Conference Game, 68-50

Janai Crooms recorded 24 points, 10 boards and six assists; Alyssa Geary reached double figures for the 10th consecutive game, with 17 points.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team finished off non-conference play with a 68-50 victory against Quinnipiac on Dec. 11 in Providence, R.I.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• Quinnipiac got out to a 7-2 lead 2:33 into the game as the Friars started out 1-5 from the field.
• A 7-0 run for the Friars capped by a traditional three-point play from Janai Crooms gave PC its first lead (9-7) with 5:15 on the clock.
• The Friars extended their run to 10-0 on a Lauren Sampson three pointer at 3:16 (12-7).
• Crooms scored seven of the Friars' 12 points in the run.
• Quinnipiac closed the first quarter with a 5-0 spurt to get within one at the break (15-14).
 
2ND QUARTER:
• Providence started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to force a Quinnipiac timeout just 1:43 into the action (21-14).
• The Friars' lead reached double figures at 4:12 on a take to the hoop by Crooms (28-18).
• Quinnipiac halted the Friars' 9-0 run late in the second with a bucket from Mikala Morris, but Crooms converted an and-1 on the offensive end to make it a 35-20 game.
• The Friars outscored the Bobcats 20-8 in the second quarter, marking the first time this season that Quinnipiac had been held to single digits in a quarter.
• Providence led 35-22 at halftime.
• Crooms paced all players in the opening 20 minutes with 14 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Alyssa Geary added nine points, four rebounds and two assists in the first half.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence pushed out to its largest lead of the game with 2:45 left in the quarter (48-30).
• An 8-0 run by Quinnipiac made it a 10-point game (48-38) with less than a minute to play.
• The Friars held for the last shot of the quarter – a three by Crooms with the shot clock at :01.
• Crooms' shot rimmed out, but Emily Archibald was there for the offensive board at the put back at the buzzer to end the quarter (50-38).
• Quinnipiac held a 16-15 scoring advantage in the third.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• Crooms eclipsed 20 points for the second time this season after collecting a steal and going coast-to-coast for a lay-up to get the scoring going in the fourth at the 9:18 mark.
• A 5-1 spurt by the Bobcats made it a 53-43 game, but Crooms and Geary got back-to-back buckets to extend the lead back to 14 (57-43).
• Providence used a 9-0 run to push its lead to 21 (66-45) with under three to play en route to the 68-50 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Crooms finished the day with her fifth double-double of the season on 24 points and 10 rebounds. She also added six assists, one steal and one blocked shot.
• Crooms' 24 points marked her second 20+ point game of the season and was one point shy of her season high.
• Geary hit double figures for the 10th straight game with 17 points. She also contributed six boards, two assists and one block.
Emily Archibald was the third Friar to crack double digits in the scoring column (10), marking her fourth game in double figures this season. She also collected five rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and a game-high three steals.
• The Friars' defense held Quinnipiac to a season-low 50 points on 35.1-percent shooting (20-57). 
• Providence shot 43.5-percent from the floor (27-62), including 40-percent from three-point territory (6-15). 
• The Friars held a 40-20 scoring edge in the paint and also won the rebounding battle, 42-33.
• Sixteen of the Friars' 42 rebounds came off the offensive glass, helping to post a 15-8 scoring edge in second-chance points.
• Providence snapped a three-game winless streak to Quinnipiac with today's victory.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars resume BIG EAST Conference play against Creighton on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network via FloSports.
