Friars Open The Season With A 63-57 Overtime Loss To Yale

Cranston native Janai Crooms tallied a game-high 18 points in her debut with the Friars.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Yale, 63-57, in overtime to open the 2021-22 season on Nov. 9 at Alumni Hall. Cranston native Janai Crooms scored a game-high 18 points in her debut with the Friars, including a baseline jumper as the clock expired in regulation to send the game to OT.
 
1st QUARTER:
• The Friars hit their first two shot attempts of the game as freshmen Emily Archibald (Kennebunk, Maine) and Kylee Sheppard (Cincinnati, Ohio) each drained three pointers for their first collegiate points.
• Providence held an 8-0 lead at the media timeout (4:38), as Yale started the game 0-7 from the field.
• The Bulldogs got on the board for the first time as Camilla Emsbo hit the second of two free throw attempts at 4:24 (8-1).
• The Bulldogs cut the deficit to one (9-8) with 54-second on the clock.
• Crooms hit one of two free throws to close the scoring in the quarter (10-8).
 
2nd QUARTER:
• Providence led by as many as nine with 6:40 remaining in the first half (19-10) as Lauren Sampson (Waltham, Mass.) knocked down her second bucket of the day.
• The Friars held a 25-16 lead before Yale's Jenna Clark converted an and-1 with three seconds left on the clock.
• Providence held a 25-19 lead at halftime.
• Sheppard paced the Friars with seven points, while Clark scored nine for the Bulldogs.
 
3rd QUARTER:
• Yale started the quarter with a 7-2 scoring run to get within one (27-26). 
• The Bulldogs tied the game for the first time (29-29).
• Archibald converted an and-1 for the Friars, followed by a Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) lay-up to give PC a 34-29 advantage.
• Yale took its first lead of the game (37-36) with 1:33 on the clock. 
• Crooms responded for the Friars with a pair of free throws and a coast-to-coast bucket to put PC back on top (40-37).
• Providence held a 40-39 lead heading into the break.
 
4th QUARTER:
• Yale opened the fourth with a 4-0 scoring spurt to take the lead for just the second time in the game (43-40).
• The game was knotted at 43-43 for nearly two minutes before Clark scored on a lay-up for Yale as the shot clock expired.
• Baskerville and Crooms got back-to-back buckets for the Friars to help their squad regain the lead (47-45).
• The Friars called timeout with 19.9 seconds left in the game, trailing 49-48.
• Providence turned the ball over and fouled Yale with 1.7 seconds left. 
• Yale made one of two free throws and the Friars called timeout to advance the ball, trailing by two (50-48).
• Sampson inbounded the ball to Crooms on the baseline and she hit a fade-away jumper to tie the game as the clock expired (50-50).
 
OVERTIME:
• Klara Astrom opened the scoring in the overtime session with a three pointer and Yale never relinquished the lead.
• The Bulldogs led by as many as seven in the extra session (61-54), en route to the 63-57 win.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• In addition to her 18 points, Crooms also contributed seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
• Baskerville finished the night just shy of a double-double with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. She added a career-high six blocked shots and grabbed four steals.
• Archibald cracked double digits in her Providence debut with 10 points and also added five boards and two assists in 36 minutes of action.
• Astrom and Clark each scored 14 points for Yale, while Emsbo posted a double-double on 10 points and 10 boards.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence hits the road to face Maine on Saturday, Nov. 13. The game will be played in Orono, Maine and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
