Women's Basketball Falls To Boston College In Regional Battle, 85-73

Janai Crooms finished just shy of a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.


PROVIDENCE, R.I.
 – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to regional-foe Boston College, 85-73, on Saturday, Nov. 20 in Providence, R.I. 
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars had a 15-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
• A trio of Friars combined to fuel the offense in the first, led by Janai Crooms (six points).
• Freshman Kylee Sheppard added five points, while classmate Olivia Olsen provided a spark off the bench with four points.
 
2ND QUARTER:
• The Eagles held a 21-19 lead with 8:30 on the clock early in the second.
• The Friars went on an 8-2 run over the next 4:09 to take a 27-21 edge with 4:34 left in the half.
• Boston College got back within three (30-27) with 1:30 to play in the second, but Providence took a 31-27 lead at halftime.
• Crooms paced the Friars with 12 first-half points, while Sheppard checked in with 10. 
• Olsen shot 3-3 from the field to eclipse her season high through just one half of play (seven points).
• Cameron Swartz scored a team-best 12 points for Boston College. 
• Providence held a 27-20 advantage on the glass.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• Providence extended its lead to eight (37-29) with back-to-back three pointers by Sheppard and senior Alyssa Geary.
• The Eagles scored six-straight points to get within 37-35 and force a Friar timeout (7:44).
• The score remained unchanged until the 6:02 mark, when Taylor Soule cashed in after getting two offensive rebounds and a put-back, tying the game, 37-37.
• The Eagles held on to the momentum, getting out to a 10-point lead (57-47) with under a minute to play and took a 57-49 advantage into the final quarter.
• BC outscored Providence 30-18 during the frame.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the fourth with a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to two (57-55). Emily Archibald scored her first four points of the game during the run.
• Boston College responded with an 8-2 run to get some separation with a 65-57 advantage.
• Sheppard hit a big three-point bucket to make it a 65-60 game.
• The Eagles managed to pull away, once again, on the strength of a 10-3 run en route to the 85-73 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Sheppard, who missed the Friars' last two games, returned to the court to score a season-high 18 points. She also added seven rebounds and three steals. 
• Crooms posted her second double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 boards. She fell one assist shy of a triple double (nine).
• Geary reached double-figures for the third-straight game, despite playing just 18 minutes due to foul trouble.
• Providence had four players with 4+ fouls in the game, including two disqualifications (Geary and Audrey Koch).
• Boston College's win on Saturday marked the first for the Eagles at Alumni Hall since Nov. 13, 2015.
• Five Boston College players reached double figures in the game, led by Marnelle Garraud's 17 points.
• The Friars held Soule to a season-low 11 points. She entered the game averaging 21 points per contest.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
• The Friars return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 23 against UMass. Tip-off is slated for 4:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium.
