MADISON, Wis. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the Wisconsin Badgers, 63-58, on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis. in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. With the win, the Friars improve to 3-0 on the season. It marks the first time the Friars have started the season with a 3-0 mark since 2015-16. Graduate student Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) led the way for the Friars with 24 points. Junior Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) posted game-highs in rebounds and assists, with nine and seven, respectively.
"I'm in my 28th year coaching and this is one of the better wins we've had," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "I thought we showed resilience and I thought we were really tough."
FIRST HALF:
- Watson scored the first five points for the Friars.
- The Friars led 5-2 at the 15:49 timeout. Each team was on a scoring drought heading into the break.
- Wisconsin opened the game on a cold streak, shooting 2-10 from the field.
- Watson knocked down a jumper from the post at the 9:45 mark. Leading up to this basket, the Friars had missed eight of their previous nine shot attempts. The Badgers held a slim 13-12 lead.
- Watson and Wisconsin's Brad Davison each reached double-figures midway through the first half.
- With 5:46 remaining in the half, Justin Minaya (Harrington Park, N.J.) buried a three-pointer from the left wing to give the Friars a 22-18 lead.
- With just under four minutes left in the half, A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) added a three-point basket of his own to extend the Friars' lead to seven, 27-20.
- The Friars finished the half on a 22-5 run that had lasted over nine minutes.
- Providence held a double-digit lead at halftime, 34-23.
- Providence shot 12-32 (37.5%) from the field, 4-11 (36.4%) from three, and 6-9 (66.7%) from the free throw line.
- Wisconsin shot 7-27 (25.9%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from three, and 6-8 (75.0%) from the free throw line.
SECOND HALF:
- Watson scored the opening basket of the second half for the Friars. Bynum assisted on the play.
- The Badgers went on a quick scoring run to narrow the Friars' lead to five points ahead of the first timeout of the half.
- Following the timeout, Al Durham (Lilburn, Ga.) knocked down a three-pointer at the top of the key to extend the Friars lead, 43-35.
- Wisconsin had missed 10 of their last 11 attempts from the field heading into the 7:28 media timeout. The Friars maintained their lead, 50-42.
- A second-chance layup by Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) gave the Friars their largest lead of the game, 13 points. The score was 55-42.
- The Badgers went on an 8-0 run down the stretch. With two minutes left to play, the Friars led by only five points.
- At the 1:44 mark, Durham connected on a contested three-pointer for the Friars. Davison responded on the next possession for the Badgers. Entering the final minute, PC still held the lead, 58-52.
- Alyn Breed (Powder Springs, Ga.) sealed the game for the Friars from the free throw line.
- "We try to make a statement every time we are on the road," Watson said. "This is definitely going to give us confidence down the road."
- "As this group matures and as they get better, they are going to be a tough out," Cooley added.
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS:
- Providence finished 22-54 (40.7%) from the field, 8-22 (36.4%) from three, and 11-19 (57.9%) from the free throw line.
- Wisconsin finished 20-61 (32.8%) from the field, 5-27 (18.5%) from three, and 13-17 (76.5%) from the free throw line.
- The Friars out-rebounded the Badgers 44-35.
- Three players finished in double figures for the Friars, in Durham, Reeves, and Watson.
- Horchler posted a game-high three blocks.
- Brad Davison led the way for Wisconsin with a game-high 25 points and three steals. Davison also registered a team-high seven rebounds for the Badgers.
- With the win, the Friars ended Wisconsin's 23-game winning streak at home against non-conference opponents.

- The Friars head back home to take on the University of New Hampshire on Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is at 6:30 p.m. and will be televised on FS2.
