Men's Soccer Advances To BIG EAST Championship Game

No. 2 seed Friars defeat No. 6 seed Butler in the semifinal round.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 2 seed Providence College men's soccer team defeated No 6 seed Butler, 2-0, in the BIG EAST Semifinal on Thursday, Nov. 11 at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. The Friars will advance to the BIG EAST Championship Game for the second time in the last three years and will face top-seeded Georgetown. The title match is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 14 at Noon and will be nationally televised on FS2.

GAME FLOW
Luis Garcia had the Friars' first solid scoring opportunity just over 11 minutes into the action, but the shot attempt sailed high and wide of the goal.
Simon Triantafillous had only the goalkeeper to beat in the 20th minute, but low shot directed at the far post missed by mere inches.
• In the 28th minute, Garcia chipped a ball toward the upper left of the cage and the Butler goalkeeper Gabriel Gjergi got a hand on it, deflecting it off the crossbar and out of danger.
Brendan McSorley also missed by inches with a well-struck ball toward the left post in the 39th minute.
• The Bulldogs' lone shot attempt came just 19-seconds into the game and was a bid that sailed high off the foot of Wilmer Cabrera.
• Providence held a 6-1 advantage in shots after the first 45 minutes of play.
• In the second half, Butler was awarded a penalty kick in the 55th minute, but Lukas Burns kept the game level with a diving save to his right.
• The Friars then scored two goals in exactly a minute
• On the first corner kick of the second half for the Friars, it was McSorley striking first on a header at the right post off a feed from Luis Garcia (64:22).
• At 64:22, Triantafillou carried the ball 25 yards into the 16 and dumped a pass into Gevork Diarbian on the doorstep. Diarbian forced the goalkeeper to commit before taking the ball to the right and putting a strike into the back of the net.
• Burns maintained the clean sheet with a brilliant save with a minute to play in regulation.
 
NOTES
• Burns recorded three saves in the match and earned his sixth shutout overall and fifth shutout victory.
• McSorley owns a team-best seven goals on the season, and his tally vs. Butler marked his third game winner of the year.
• Diarbian's goal marked his third of the season. 
• Providence improved to 2-0 all-time against Butler in the BIG EAST Tournament.
• The Friars improved to 6-9 all-time in the semifinal round.
• The Friars will be making their sixth appearance in the BIG EAST Championship Game, when they take on top-seed Georgetown on Sunday, Nov. 14 at Noon. 
• Providence also will be making its second appearance in the title game in the last three years. 
• Sunday's game will be a rematch of the 2019 championship game, which Georgetown won by a score of 3-1.
• Providence held a 9-8 advantage in shots, despite a 7-3 margin in the second half by Butler.
