Hjalmarsson and Abstreiter Earn Hockey East Monthly Honors

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) and Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) of the Providence College women's ice hockey team were named Hockey East Player of the Month and Hockey East Goaltender of the Month, respectively, for November and December 2020, as announced on Monday, Jan. 4. Abstreiter has been previously recognized twice this season as Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week. (Nov. 23 and Nov. 30).
Hjalmarsson has played in all eight games for the Friars this season and is currently leading the team in points (10) and assists (6). She tied for the lead among all Hockey East players in points in both November and December. The junior forward is averaging 1.25 points per game, has assisted on three game-winning goals, and is a +10 on the season. She has recorded three multi-point games, including an impressive three-assist performance against Maine on Dec. 18, helping the team to a 4-0 win. The Friars are 6-0-0 when Hjalmarsson records a point.
Abstreiter has started all eight games for the Friars in the 2020-21 season and has recorded 207 saves, stopping 87 out of 90 shots she faced in December alone. The senior netminder led the league in shutouts (2) for the month of December and tied for the lead in wins (3). She also has registered the most wins by an NCAA goaltender for the 2020-21 season. Overall, she has posted a 6-1-1 record, has a 1.24 goals against average and a .954 save percentage this season.
The Friars finished off November and December with a 6-1-1 record. The team entered the Top-10 in the USCHO.com polls and was most recently ranked as No. 7 (Jan. 4).
