ORLANDO, Fla. - The Providence College women's tennis team defeated Millsaps College, 5-2, in a hard-fought battle that lasted over three hours on Monday night (March 9) at the USTA Center in Lake Nona, Orlando, Fla.Â
The doubles point was tightly contested with the Friars earning wins on courts one and three. Freshman
Brenna Magliochetti started out fast and strong sprinting through her match winning 6-1, 6-0 to get the Friars rolling in singles play. All other matches battled long into the evening under the lights in front of an excited crowd.
Haley Gurski performed well in a tough two-set match on court three, 6-3, 6-4.
Mimi Dailey fought back from a set down but ended up losing in three sets, as Millsaps got on the board at 3-1. The Friars needed one more point to clinch the match and got it from freshman
Vannelie Melendez. Melendez carried the momentum from her 7-6 win in set one to blank her opponent in the second set to clinch the match.
Julia Migliorini fell just short in a third set tiebreaker, but court two with freshman
Katie Mulvey finished strong with a 6-4 second set to make it 5-2 final.

"It was a great college match, two teams who were ready to go the distance," said Head Coach
Jakob Klaeson. "The team now sees the benefits of all the hard work that was put in outside the court during the off season. We showed a lot of toughness tonight and gained valuable experience that we'll hopefully be able to use in our next match."
Providence is back in action in on March 11 against Creighton. The match will take place at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. at 9:45 a.m.
