BOSTON, Mass. – The Gridiron Club of Greater Boston has announced the 23 semifinalists for the 68th Walter Brown Award, given to the best American-born Division I college hockey player in New England. Providence College sophomores Michael Callahan (Franklin, Mass.), Jack Dugan (Rochester, N.Y.) and Tyce Thompson (Milford, Conn.) were named semifinalists.

Eleven teams are represented in the slate of candidates that includes 17 forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders. Seventeen nominees are from teams in Hockey East; four nominees are from ECAC Hockey; two are from Atlantic Hockey.  Providence, Boston College, Maine and Harvard each have three nominees. Boston University, Northeastern, UMass and Sacred Heart have two each.

Callahan, a co-captain this season, has shattered his freshmen totals (2-8-10) with five goals and 20 assists in 26 games for the Friars. He has recorded a point in 18 games this season and has seven multi-point performances. Callahan ranks seventh among all NCAA defensemen with 25 points and has separate point streaks of six and seven games this season.

After posting 39 points during his rookie campaign in 2018-19, Dugan has raced out to the national scoring lead this season with 44 points in 26 games played. He tops all NCAA players in assists (35), points per game (1.69) and even-strength points (26). His 15 games of at least two points and three games of four points also are the most in the nation. Dugan is a two-time Hockey East Player of the Week selection and was the league's player of the month for October. He is a nominee for the 2020 Hobey Baker Award.

Thompson has already eclipsed his 25-point total from last season with 38 points on 17 goals and 21 assists. The 38 points rank third nationally, while his 17 goals are tied for third in the nation. He has also registered a goal in 15-of-26 games and a point in 23-of-26 games this season, with 13 multi-point efforts. Thompson is also a nominee for the 2020 Hobey Baker Award.

The nation's oldest nationally-recognized college hockey honor, the Walter Brown Award was established in 1953 by the members of the 1933 Massachusetts Rangers, the first American team ever to win the World Championship Tournament. Brown coached the Rangers to the title in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where the team defeated Canada 2-1 in overtime in the championship game.
