INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Providence College men's basketball team upset the No. 16/17 Butler Bulldogs, 65-61, on Saturday, Feb. 1 in Indianapolis, Ind. The Friars improved their record to 12-10 on the season and 5-4 in BIG EAST play. This was the Friars' first win over a ranked opponent since March 9, 2018 and the team's first win over a ranked opponent on the road since winning at No. 23 Creighton on February 22, 2017.
Two Friars recorded double-digit scoring.
Luwane Pipkins led the Friars with 22 points, three rebounds and two assists. He shot 4-9 from three. He also was 10-10 from the free-throw line and helped seal win with six consecutive free throws in the final 30 seconds of the game.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) added 10 points and four rebounds. Senior
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) led the team in rebounds with nine.
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) scored the opening basket on a slam dunk from Young. The Bulldogs struck back scoring the next five points. Both teams struggled scoring in the opening minutes. Butler had the lead 5-4 in at the first media timeout.
Watson kept it going down low scoring his second field goal of the game and completing the three-point play. Butler had not scored a field in the last five minutes, gaining their last six points at the line. Providence called the first timeout of the game with 12:16 on the clock after Butler went on a 6-0 run in the last 1:15.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) scored the first three for the Friars coming out of the timeout.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) used his skills around the rim to score the next two baskets for the Friars on a driving layups. With just under eight minutes to play, Butler still had control with the score at 18-16.
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) contributed with his first three of the afternoon to tie the score at 19. Butler struggled once again getting the ball in the net. Byrce Nze made their fifth field goal with five minutes left in the first. Reeves kept it going with an and one floater in the paint giving the Friars their second lead of the game.
Pipkins got hot scoring his second basket from downtown. The Friars led 29-25 with 54 seconds on the clock. The Friars defense held off the Bulldogs in the remaining minutes. Butler had three turnovers and no field goals in the last five minutes.
Both teams headed into the locker room with a 31-25 Providence lead. Providence shot 11-30 (36.7%), 3-12 (25.0%) from three and 6-6 (100%) from the line. Butler was 5-17 (29.4%) from the field, 1-5 (20.0%) from three and 14-19 (73.7%) from the line. Butler had 11 turnovers in the first to the Friars six. Providence capitalized off this, scoring 11 points off the Bulldogs turnovers.
Watson scored the opening baskets for the Friars to increase their lead. Butler found some energy going on a 6-0 run which Duke was able to end on a jumper inside the paint. Providence led 39-34 at the first media timeout.
Pipkins continued to shoot well from beyond the arc making a big shot with 11:31 left in the second half. A minute a half later, Pipkins drained another three as the shot clock expired to put the Friars back up six.
The Friars went cold, not making a field goal in the last 4:35 minutes of play. White ended that drought on a huge make from three-point land. The Friars found themselves with a four point lead.
On a Providence possession, Duke kept the ball alive and scored in the paint on a third chance opportunity with 2:21 on the clock. The score was 58-54. In the remaining 30 seconds it became a game of free throws. Providence led 63-60 with 14 seconds to go. Pipkins fouled Kamar Baldwin on the floor to send him to line. Baldwin made one of two to give the Friars the ball again. With barely any time taken of the clock, Pipkins got sent to the line and made both free throws to put the Friars up four and give the Friars the win.
Providence ended the afternoon shooting 21-52 (40.4%) from the field, 6-20 (30.0%) from three and 17-21 (81.0%) from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 18-45 (40.0%), 1-14 (7.1%) from three and 24-31 (77.4%) from the line.
Up next, the Friars take on the Creighton Bluejays on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The game is set for tip-off at 7:00 p.m. and will be on FSN/YurView.
