PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by the Maine Black Bears, 62-48, on Thursday, Dec. 10 at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. The Friars fall to 3-4 overall, while the America East favorites improved to 1-0.
FIRST QUARTER:
- The Black Bears jumped out to an 8-0 start heading into the media timeout.
- Providence responded with a 12-3 run to take its first lead of the game, 12-11.
- Maine led after 19-16 after the opening 10 minutes.
- Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) paced the Frias with six points and two rebounds in the opening frame.
- Providence scored 10 of the 16 points in the paint.
SECOND QUARTER:
- Maine took a 33-20 lead into the half after outscoring Providence 14-4 in the quarter.
- Orlando and Baskerville paced the Friars with six points each at the break.
- Providence shot 8-26 (30.8-percent) from the field to Maine's 14-30 (46.7-percent).
THIRD QUARTER:
- After falling behind 41-20, the Friars battled back with an 11-0 to cut the Black Bears lead to 10.
- Providence outscored Maine 19-15 in the quarter but still trailed, 48-39.
- The Friars shot 7-18 (38.9-percent) from the field and 4-8 (50-percent) from deep.
- Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied six points, including a three pointer to beat the buzzer. She added three rebounds and three assists in the quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
- Maine opened the quarter on an 8-0 run to extend the lead back to 17.
- The Black Bears outscored the Friars 14-9 in the quarter
NOTES/HIGHLIGHTS
- Maine gets its first win in series history against Providence. The Friars lead the all-time series, 6-1.
- Williams led the Friars in points (eight), rebounds (seven), assists (four) and steals (three).
