ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by Indiana University, 79-58, on Monday, Nov. 30 in the first round of the Maui Invitational in Asheville, N.C. David Duke (Providence, R.I.) and Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) each scored a team-high 12 points.
"We're honored to be in this tournament," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "Unfortunately, we didn't play well today."
At the 19:42 mark, Watson banked it in for the first Friars points of the game. Watson broke a Friars scoring drought that lasted above three minutes with 16:05 remaining in the first half. Indiana led 9-4 at the first media timeout.
Duke knocked down his first jumper of the game with 8:01 left, ending an 8-0 run by Indiana. The Hoosiers held a 25-11 lead entering the 7:10 media timeout.
With 4:47 left in the half, A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) converted on an and-one to end a Friars shooting drought. Reeves and Jared Bynum (Largo, Md.) each made field goals during a 6-0 run, forcing an Indiana timeout with 0:59 remaining. The Friars cut the deficit to 11, as the Hoosiers led 35-24.
Indiana held a 37-24 lead at halftime. Providence shot 9-20 (45.0%) from the field, 0-5 (0%) from three, and 6-11 (54.5%) from the free throw line. Indiana shot 14-33 (42.4%) from the field, 2-11 (18.2%) from three, and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line.
At the 19:40 mark of the second half, Duke scored the team's first three-point basket of the game for the first points of the half. Providence trailed 51-36 at the 14:39 media timeout. The Friars had made each of their last three shots and the Hoosiers had made each of their last four.
The score was 62-46 with 8:00 remaining in the game. Duke knocked down two free throws ahead of the final media timeout, narrowing the Indiana lead to 12. With 3:53 left, the Hoosiers held a 67-55 edge but had not made a field goal in the last 2:30 minutes.
Providence finished 19-51 (37.3%) from the field, 3-17 (17.6%) from three, and 17-27 (63.0%) from the free throw line. Indiana finished 28-62 (45.2%) from the field, 5-14 (35.7%) from three, and 18-24 (75.0%) from the free throw line. Aljami Durham and Race Thompson combined for 41 points for the Hoosiers.
Two players finished in double-figures for the Friars, in Duke and Watson. Bynum also registered nine points. Noah Horchler (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) brought seven points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Up next, the Friars will play Davidson in their second game of the Maui Invitational on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.
