Friars Defeat Bryant 67-40 In Home Opener

Providence earned a weekend sweep of URI and Bryant over the weekend to improve to 2-1 on the season.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team completed a weekend sweep of its intrastate rivals with a 67-40 victory over Bryant on Nov. 29 in Providence, R.I. A day earlier, the Friars claimed a 76-50 win over Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
Mary Baskerville opened the game with back-to-back buckets to give the Friars a 4-0 lead.
• Providence extended its lead to 10-5 with 2:19 on the clock as Chanell Williams knocked down a pair of free throws.
• Bryant closed the quarter with a 6-2 scoring advantage to close the gap to 12-11.
• Baskerville paced the Friars with six points, while Olivia Orlando grabbed a team-best three boards.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• Providence started the second quarter with a 9-2 run to claim a 22-13 lead with 4:19 on the clock.
• The Friars went into the locker room at halftime with a 27-18 advantage.
• Providence dominated the paint in the opening half, outscoring Bryant, 16-6.
• The Friars led by as many as 10 in the half (25-25) with 45-seconds on the clock.
• Baskerville hit 7-of-8 (88-percent) shot attempts in the first half to record 14 points. The rest of the squad combined to shoot 4-of-22 (19-percent).
• Alana Perkins led the Bulldogs with 11 first-half points.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• The Friars opened the third with seven-straight points to force a Bryant timeout with 7:07 on the clock (34-18).
Alyssa Geary scored four points in the run, while Kyra Spiwak added three.
• Williams and Julia Fabozzi hit back-to-back threes to extend the run to 13-0, giving Providence a 40-18 lead (4:42).
• Providence took a 49-27 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Bryant outscored Providence 7-2 in the opening 1:53 of the fourth to make it a 51-34 game.
• The Friars regained their form to outscore the Bulldogs 18-13 in the fourth quarter overall.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars improve to 9-1 all-time against Bryant. Last season, the Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 76-32, in Smithfield, R.I. in the opening game of the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament.
• Baskerville paced the Friars with a season-high 18 points on 9-13 shooting. She added five rebounds, two assists and a career-high five blocked shots.
• Williams netted 15 points on 5-8 shooting, including a 3-4 performance from beyond the arc. 
• Williams' three triples mark a career high.
• Geary narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. She also added four assists, one steal and one blocked shot.
• Sophomore Lauren Sampson gave the Friars a lift off the bench with a career-best eight points. She finished the day 2-5 from three-point territory and collected two steals.
• For the game, Providence shot 47.5-percent from the field (28-59), including a blistering 64.3-percent in the third quarter (9-14).
• Providence held the Bulldogs to 28.6-percent shooting on the day (16-56).
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2 against ACC foe Boston College. The game will be played at Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. and is scheduled to tip-off at 5:00 p.m.
