Men’s Soccer Hosts Annual End Of The Season Banquet

The class of 2020 was honored and the team’s award winners were recognized.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's soccer team hosted its annual season-ending banquet on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Seniors Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.), Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.), Matt DePerro (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.), Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal), Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal), and Tristan Stowell (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The team announced the annual award winners at the event. Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) earned the Karl Anderson Most Valuable Offensive Player award, while Ramzi Qawasmy (Landsdale, Pa.) earned the Martin Hayes Defensive MVP award. Malcolm Duncan (Toronto, Ontario) was named the David Kreinsen Unsung Hero and Danny Griffin was awarded the John Murphy Team Award.
Additionally, Tristian Stowell was recognized with the Bill Doyle Academic Achievement Award. To round out the honors, senior Joao Serrano took home the Fr. Folsey Champion of Character Award.
The Friars finished the 2019 season with a record of 16-7 overall and 6-3 in BIG EAST play. Providence entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed and reached the championship game. They were selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament for the tenth time in program history and made it to the round of 16.
Five Friars were recognized by the BIG EAST with postseason awards. Mendonca and Serrano were named to the First Team and Lima was named to the Second Team. Aviza and Griffin were named to the newly added Third Team. Lima, Mendonca and Serrano also received United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team honors.
