PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College men's soccer players
Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) and
Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) were selected in the 2020 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft on Thursday, January 9. Aviza was drafted 18
th in the second round (44
th overall) by Orlando City, while Griffin was selected 23
rd in the second round (49
th overall) by the Columbus Crew SC.
During the 2019 season, Aviza started all 23 games in net and notched nine shutouts. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, twice (Sept. 23 and Nov. 8), and received All-BIG EAST Third Team honors. He collected 56 saves for the Friars and averaged a .709 save percentage.
Griffin registered 32 points on 13 goals and six assists in his Friar career. He started all 80 games during his career with the Friars. To close out the 2019 season, Griffin earned All-BIG EAST Third-Team honors. Previously, he was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in 2018 and was a unanimous selection for the to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
Aviza and Griffin led the Friars to a 16-7 overall record and 6-3 mark in league play in the 2019 season. Providence reached the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in program history and advanced to the Championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament.
