PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the No. 6/6 Butler Bulldogs, 70-58, on Friday, January 10 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars fall to 10-7 on the season and 3-1 in BIG EAST play. Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) scored a game-high 21 points for Friars.
The Bulldogs found a rhythm in the opening minutes of the contest. The Friars found themselves with a seven-point deficit with the score at 7-0. Providence took the first timeout of the half after just under three minutes of play.
"We lost the game because we played against a really high-quality, well-coached basketball team," said Head Coach Ed Cooley. "They deserve a lot of credit. I'm proud of where we are right now," said Cooley. "We are 3-1 right now and have an opportunity to play a game at home on Wednesday. Unfortunately, we looked really tired tonight and did not have the energy."
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) scored the opening points for the Friars at the 13:25 minute mark in the first half. Diallo made the first three-pointer for the Friars on the following possession.
With under nine minutes left in the first half, the Friars fell behind 14-5 and called their second team timeout. A Providence scoring drought had lasted more than four minutes. David Duke (Providence, R.I.) knocked down two free throws to put an end to the drought.
Diallo scored two consecutive baskets with just under seven minutes left to get the Friars rolling. Duke added a three-pointer with 3:42 left to cut the deficit to seven points.
The score was 30-18 at halftime, with Butler leading by 12 points. Providence shot 6-30 (20.0%) from the field, 2-13 (15.4%) from three, and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free throw line in the first half. Butler shot 11-21 (52.4%) from the field, 4-7 (57.1%) from three, and 4-4 (100.0%) from the free throw line.
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) opened up the second half with baskets on consecutive possessions. With 16:22 left, Duke converted on two free throws after a technical foul was called on Butler head coach LaVall Jordan. Shortly after, A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) made his first three of the game.
With just over 13 minutes left, White stole the ball and converted on a transition layup. He finished with 11 points in the game. Going into the media timeout, Butler controlled with the score at 52-39. Diallo had scored seven of the last eight points by the Friars. The Bulldogs kept shooting well from the field to keep their lead.
The Friars began to run a full-court press as the second half progressed. Diallo stole the ball and assisted on a Duke layup, cutting the Butler lead to 12 with 6:09 to play. Providence took a timeout with 4:48 left, and White capitalized on an and-one on the ensuing possession. The Friars cut their deficit to eight.
Providence fell behind 61-49 after a layup by Butler's Bryce Golden, forcing the Friars to call their final timeout. The Bulldogs held on in the final minutes to win the game.
Providence finished 19-60 (31.7%%) from the field, 6-25 (24.0%) from three, and 14-19 (73.7%) from the free throw line. Butler finished 25-45 (55.6%) from the field, 6-12 (50.0%) from three, and 14-21 (66.7%) from the free throw line. Jordan Tucker and Kamar Baldwin led the way for the Bulldogs with 17 points in the game.
The Friars had three players in double-figures in Diallo, Duke, and White. They had seven players in the scoring column. The Bulldogs finished with four players in double-figures and seven in the scoring column.
Up next, the Friars will take on the St. John's Red Storm on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on FS1.
