PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Â The BIG EAST announced its weekly cross country awards on Wednesday, September 4. Providence College junior
Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.) was named the BIG EAST Cross Country Male Athlete of the Week for his performance at the UNH Tri Meet against the University of New Hampshire and the College of Holy Cross on Saturday, August 31.

Rocha earned his first career collegiate victory in the men's 5k with a time of 15:03.63 and led the Friar men to their first victory of the season. With 1,000 meters left, a UNH runner passed Rocha to take the lead. With 300 meters left, Rocha out kicked him to secure the victory. Rocha won the race by 3.6 seconds. The Friars took 10 out of the top 11 spots and recorded 19 points.

The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams will race in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown in Boston, Mass. on September 20 at 3:00 p.m.
